My girl starting Sec 1 this year & saw in her student guide the word cane mentioned as a form of discipline. Should I worry? Is it still common practice and can be applied to girls as well?

I believe the school won't anyhow cane students unless it's an huge issue and they wanted to set an example. Usually it's the discipline master who cane students during Assembly time.

Or form teacher cane students plan (closed door)...

Better to be disciplined in school than in prison.

So it's legal then? I personally think it's too much. Physical punishment should be reserved for parents only. U can't compare with prison since inmates are adults deciding to screw themselves up. Students are kids learning to become adults. Huge difference.

Well many of us grew up with the cane both at home and in school and we are still doing fine today.
If you send your kid to school, then you've to have some trust in the education system to educate your child not only in academic knowledge but how to behave in a society, where the school environment is just a small sample of the wider society. So if your child fail to conform to the rules, there are consequences just like in the real world. If you can't place that kind of trust in the system, then you can consider home schooling your child or changing schools or even relocating to another country with a different education system.

As you know, this country works on the principle that if the system works, we are not changing it.

Just my 2c.

Rules need to evolve if you want to continually improve yourself. Take slavery for example. I think the cane needs to go. Just because it used to work doesn't guarantee it's going to work in the future. That's why MOE is introducing holistic curriculum because it wants to improve the education system.

Caning has been a common form of punishment in schools for years. ... Caning, therefore, should not be allowed in schools because it affects students' physical, emotional and mental well-being and fails to curb indiscipline in schools. One reason why caning should not be allowed is that it, affects students physically.
