secondary storage drive

hey i heard from my friend that external hard disk drives spoils easily so i was wondering can i use a internal hard disk and connect it to usb via usb-sata cable for secondary storage drive or ssd as secondary storage? or is external hard disk drive still the best option?

EDIT: i'm using a laptop btw
