Selecting SSD for a Old Desktop

Hi

I have one old Desktop DELL DESKTOP OPTIPLEX 9020

It was given by one of my relative for learning Linux. It do not have any Hard Disk, He asked me to buy one SSD.

I thought I will buy one 512 GB SSD and use it for learning as well as have some documents backed up.

While searching there are few options

I am bit confused. Request your inputs

1) What accessories I need to buy (Fiting inside) I have shared the picture above? Do I need 2.5" Adapter?


2) NAND or NVMe which one better

3) Segate from Amazon is cheaper. Do they have warranty if used in Singapore?


4) Among all SSD which brand is reasonably reliable?( Transcend, Seagate, and WesternDigital)

1. There are no moving parts in a SSD so you can literally just tape it to the case if you wanted to.

2. nand is the memory chip inside the SSD, NVMe is the storage protocol. It cannot be compared since nand is used in both SATA and NVMe ssd. I'm assuming you were intending to ask about SATA vs NVMe. The answer is that it depends on the workload, if you are doing high resolution video editing then NVMe's high speed might benefit you but if it's just normal web browsing, gaming etc then SATA is more than enough.

3. Assuming you are talking about samsung? Since you linked samsung drive. Not that sure of their overseas warranty policy though but amazon's return policy is quite lenient. SSD usually have something called the bathtub curve where the SSD either usually fails at the first few weeks or it will take many years for it to die.

I think the transcend SSD is the worst of the bunch due to the weaker SSD controller and higher price as compared to 860 evo. There's no M.2 slot on the motherboard as well I believe so the WD M.2 ssd is out of the equation.
