I think it’s not been used for such a long time for a reason.

till Russia start collecting the "protection" fee

AI Overview

Fees for the Arctic route in Russia are high, particularly for large tankers and LNG carriers, with costs for a single icebreaker escort potentially reaching $300,000–$700,000 depending on vessel size, distance, and season. The fees are charged by Rosatomflot, which operates Russia's nuclear icebreaker fleet and is essential for maintaining the route, especially during winter. The total cost for a transit can also include other charges and reflects Russia's substantial investment in developing the route's infrastructure.

Details of the fees
  • Icebreaker escort fees:
Large oil tankers and LNG carriers can pay between $300,000 and $700,000 for a single icebreaker escort, with a typical delivery from the Yamal LNG plant costing around $400,000.

  • Basis for fees:
The fees are charged by Rosatomflot, Russia's state-owned nuclear icebreaker fleet operator, which is crucial for ensuring year-round access to the Northern Sea Route (NSR).

  • Other costs:
The total cost of a journey is also influenced by factors like the time of year, the distance traveled, and other Russian tariffs on the NSR.

  • Infrastructure investment:
These fees are used to maintain the infrastructure and services required for the route, which is part of Russia's larger investment plan for the Arctic.
Factors influencing cost
  • Vessel size: Larger vessels will incur higher costs.

  • Distance: The distance traveled along the route impacts the total cost.

  • Time of year: Winter escorts are essential and add to the price, though this is the main focus of infrastructure development to make the route more accessible.

  • Other Russian tariffs: The Russian government imposes tariffs on the use of the NSR.

Nice. I did that when playing Uncharted Waters game. It's a reality now.

Wild factor is Russia.

Bypassing the riskier ME/Suez Canal, Indian Ocean, Malacca Straits, South China Sea.

Reported to halve nautical mileage, halve carbon emission and halve journey time.

Pirates be like, time to relocate to the North Pole liao.

I don’t know about “riskier”.

This route is very specialized. Strictly point to point bulk cargo since there are no stops of opportunity.

An ice class vessel, which is far heavier and far more expensive is needed, and icebreaker escort may be required.

Then there is the geopolitical factor.
