Thats a gd idea using my Medisave to pay for my dad as when I was growing up, he paid for my Plan A. Now its time to repay the favour..but when I brought this up he refuses to hear of it and says I must think long term and conserve my Medisave for myself too.

Soul77, yes its the old plan C unfortunately which is not that great. He's agreed to downgrade to this rather than just depend on Medishield life. It has slightly better coverage than Medishield Life and quite affordable in the long term too. The downgrade form doesnt have the option to change to the new enhanced C.

I am still hoping to change his mind and up it to Plan B haha.
Paying 1k to safe guards against future medical fee risk i think is ok. U can opt as a pvt patient.

I was too sick to tot of that when i got admitted.

All the old Plans P, A, B, C pre and post hospitalisation are limited to unused balance only according to the link below.

A B1 ward is good if you want a senior consultant-type to attend to you, and then if your condition is chronic you'll need to keep paying outpatient charges as a private patient after you're discharged. So must think about this point also.

Different pple different casestudy.

In my parents case i pay for the cash portion while they still deduct their medisave account... i went for the highest plan because local govt hospital always long waits and pattern alot. I have face such cases before towards my close old ones (not parents).

recently my mum did went for a very minor issue and fully covered by my insurerers and her company but she went for govt hospital cos she dunno or worry insurance not covered ...

so sometimes my planning backfire as i want them to enjoy their life with no worries on hospitalisation ...

Nope I think as the rest have advised here, better not cancel totally and have some level of private insurance portion. Because Medishield Life covers only the basic requirements.

So I'm still looking at downgrading either to Plan B or Plan C. Predictably my dad wants Plan C while I am fighting for him to up one level to Plan B just to be kiasu a bit.

When buying insurance we always prepare for the worst, but hope for the best. Just do not want to be caught in the situation whereby certain life saving procedures only available in private hospital to get the highest chance of survival, but because of insurance coverage, only can opt in for the 2nd grade procedures in the govt hospital for example..

Hi would nt advise you to cancel. The reason y premium increases with age is cos the likelihood of hospitalisation increases as we age. Though we always say we want to save money and that its ok to stay in lower standard wards, the fact is when we are sick we really do hope to have the options available. Being in plan A allows u to choose pte, to choose the best doctors. Say u are diagnosed with cancer, one dr might suggest chemo, another might ask u try an expensive med etc. Being on plan A allows you to seek second opinion. Im nt against govt hospital but like for eg, my sis recently had to do colonscopy n mri due to her pancreatic cancer marker off range, she will have to wait 2mths if she opted for govt hos. It wil b much cheaper though at 3k+. But since she was covered fr first dollar, she went to mount elizabeth novena. It was like a 6 star hotel kind but of course bill oso ex. It came up to near 8k but insurer reimbursed fully within 2wks+. Besides if you r on plan A n opt for gov hospital, u will b given a cash amount per day of hospitalisation. It is always ez to downgrade but if u change yr mind later it will be really diff.

Yep

Think carefully. Take your time to decide.

Downgrade very easy. Upgrade so hard. Decided to upgrade with exclusion after 5 yrs of pondering. Esp having so much bad esp at public hospital.

You can claim if these r pre-hospitalization treatments that is leadin to ur hospitalization.

Colonscopy is just a day surgery. For this, you may want to contact your agent to get his advice.

Ask also if they allow you to change to the new standard plan without any additional underwriting. I think the standard plan is slightly better (and slightly more expensive of course).

I've checked on this, and yes we can! Because standard plan is considered a downgrade from Plan A.

The new standard plan is definitely better than the old Plan B. So as you rightly pointed out, its more expensive.

To buy some time, I've just renewed the Plan A for my dad (so that it won't lapse) and I'll discuss/persuade him to take on the Standard Plan which will cover B1 wards.
