Hi all.

I was using DSL 10mbps Internet from Singtel and worked well for a long time.
Now it seems I'm getting throttled.
I watch full length YouTube TV shows - on a TV. Video Skype and share files with my family in the States. etc.
Now I only get 500kbps using these services. I don't want to make problems worse so I stopped all that.
The good news is at least web surfing and downloading at full speed from a link isn't a problem.

How long do I need to wait to get DeThrottled? What is the MAX bps or bytes per day I can use without making problems? I can configure my router so I will never go above those limits. - Then I'll get a cheaper service.

thanks!

I don't think it has anything to do with throttling. In fact, the only time where an ISP wants to throttle or perform "Network Management" is when you do P2P downloads.

If you have issues with youtube or Skype, you should contact Singnet to see if they have issues on their end. I am suspecting that you are getting sent to the wrong youtube servers instead of the local ones, or perhaps the recent DDoS has to do with it.

Thanks for the post!

So, you're saying "Throttling" means EVERYTHING slows down? So if I can download from a link quickly, and other services have trouble, then that has nothing to do with throttling ??
I'll just need to call Singtel then.

As mentioned, even if an ISP were to throttle, only p2p downloads should slow down. The purpose of throttling is to ensure that p2p downloads do not overwhelm an ISP's network resources during peak hours.

There is no reason why an ISP wants to throttle your youtube streaming or Skype. In fact, doing so will just lead to more dissatisfied users which they have to contend with and risk losing to other ISPs.

ISPs throttle p2p downloads to ensure your youtube streaming stays fast at peak hours, not the other way round.

skype is a kind of p2p system, but the protocols are easily distinguished from the more popular bittorrent and gnutella (those can be recognised by large numbers of connections).

so for throttling purposes, skype won't be affected. in fact if anything, isps usually prioritize these real-time protocols.

Last night, I power cycled my router. Then my IP address changed about 5 times over a few hours.
I self limit my P2P to 1mbps and see how the rest do.
All seems a little better now. At least I'm getting 1mbps now instead of 500kbps for Skype, YouTube, etc. ; but still not as good as it should.

Also, Happy Easter!

Customer service told me nothing was wrong.
I cancelled my service replaced it with a cheaper 1mbps DSL line.
Instead of P2P, I just upload home movies to the Microsoft Sky Drive.
Then I don't use YouTube and Skype at the same time.

I don't know what people use more than 1mbps for. Even with fibre, you can't get more than 10mbps downloading overseas content.
What am I missing?
