[SIT] Acct or ICT?

Hi all,

I'm currently facing a dilemma and would appreciate all your advise and comments. I have just finished my 3rd year diploma in accountancy and my cumulative GPA is 3.0 and would be submitting my Uni application by next week.

I have a keen interest in the IT industry since young but after O's my parents being parents asked me to enter accountancy due to the "better" pay & "prospects". Long story short, i would really like to enter SIT ICT Information Security(IS) or Software Engineering(SE) to pursue my interest and with the recent development of more Hacking cases and the world being more computerised. I think the IT industry would be more promising in terms of jobs & stability.

But as my diploma is in Accoutancy and my GPA being average, i would stand a higher chance to enter accountancy rather than ICT. So im stuck on which course to choose

If there is any IT industry expert in this forum, could you advise on what is the IT industry outlook from your personal experience?
and
which course IS or SE shows a more promising outlook?

If anyone had went for the ICT or ACCT Interview at SIT, could you share your experience with me?

There have been an increase in IT security institutions recently in singapore,

Do you like to do programming in your leisure time? Yes? No? Active in major programming discussion platforms?
Similarly, some good social science students, whom scores well, they like to read up current affairs, as well as opinion articles. Sometimes they might even form their own opinions of issues through publishing platforms.
- so have you been accumulating an IT portfolio or you mistakenly assume that you have interest in IT?

Aside from going into IT jobs, you can also consider accountancy by applying for Singapore QP Foundation programme after your SIT ICT degree,

You may want to book an appt with your polytechnic career services to seek professional assistance in finding your path.

U already said it yourself, your interest is in IT, go for it. I have seen people struggling in their course of study because they are simply not interested, and because they are pressured into it by their parents. Do what you enjoy and you will have a happier more fulfilling student life and career after.

Also, you could still branch into accountancy after u get your ICT degree by taking the SQP.

I can''t offer anything on the prospect of IT as I'm not in this field.

SIT interview mainly ask questions pertaining to your decision to study your chosen course, having genuine interest of the course would certainly make it easier

Actually i wanted to apply for Computer Science in SIT but due to the irrelevancy of my course, i couldnt apply.

I can't say i like programming as i only pick it up recently by learning through online platforms like codeacademy but i do certainly enjoy the feeling of programming. I am intending to pick-up programming during my pre-enlistment and 2 years of NS.

i dont get how is this related to social science but i do read up on current affairs and like seeing how ppl debate on their opinions

It is nice that you tried out programming through codecademy.
Do try your best to like it, continue with what you are doing at codecademy.
Also brush up on your Additional Maths, you can buy some guidebooks and assessment books from popular bookstore, you will need it.
- Uni lecturers and tutors may not be that good at teaching these foundational stuff, they didn't go through NIE afterall.
You can consider taking free online IT courses on coursera and edx.

It will be good, if you can try creating small programs with minor functions then move on to more complex programs during your free time. If possible, you can also try making a mobile app on iOS, Android or WP platform.

If all the above sounds too nerdy to you perhaps IT is not for you. You need constant exposure and practice to do well, similar to how good social science students are constantly exposing themselves to readings about society.

Do try to ask yourself what do you do most of the time? Reading up law cases, and like to attend open court sessions? Writing a political blog? Constantly tweaking your computers and play with detection intrusion programs? Loves to help people through volunteering in social NGOs? When you read current affairs, automatically in your mind you start dissecting it with social theories you have read about, e.g, Marx, Durkheim, Weber, etc? Likes to read on financial news and play with stock market simulators?
