SMS through a data SIM card

I have an old data SIM card bundled with my home broadband being unused for very long. Today I gave it to my son to use on his dual SIM Zenfone. Upon experimenting the thing, I discovered SMS can be sent through the data SIM card (SIM 2) too besides the prepaid HI card (SIM 1). How come? And how they'll charge it???

Yes, last time mobile broadband can be used for sms/calls too, I asked M1 last time, and they said will be charged as M-card rate (hi card rate). Nowadays broadband sim chip ban this feature, like my starhub 1G from home broadband plan, and can only be used for broadband only.

"mobile broadband" is the same thing as "broadband sim" (I assume broadband sim is the one that comes with home broadband plan) correct? Both seems to work the same way and same functions.

You'll be charged 5 cents per SMS subject to 7% gst as shown in your bill the following month. It's clearly spelled out somewhere.

When I asked StarHub about their Mobile Broadband (postpaid) plans, the CSO said SMS can be sent/received at the normal rate (5c). This will be added to your monthly bill. No calls though.

When I asked M1 about theirs, the CSO said no SMS or calls, purely data only. But I happen to use an old broadband data stick from M1 and the software (Vodafone Mobile Connect) has SMS feature which I can send or receive SMS through. I am not sure about calls (if put in a phone).

If not the bill comes and charge 5cents.
I pay my bill using visa , 5 cents is not acceptable.
Then you need to bring to the store to pay.
Transport fee excluded .

from M1 cso, phone call possible at 20c peak & 10c off-peak, yet to try
take note call charges is higher compare to hi-card

thinking of terminate my postpaid (5 months) switch to JUST mobile data
for surfing 1gb cap, unlimited SMS receive, sent sms at 5c same charge,
call sparingly at higher charges n to use landline whenever possible

me planning to buy dual sims phone for prepaid & utilise foc mobile data
or
just terminate post & switch to mobile data naked (no prepaid)

Seems like the telco CSOs all give different info to different callers. The M1 CSO told me (as I said before) that no calls or SMS are allowed on the mobile broadband SIM, and it's for data only. So be sure to confirm you can indeed send/receive calls/SMS before subscribing.

If you want only SMS and data, you can go for StarHub postpaid mobile broadband. You get a whole 6GB for $20 (3G) or $30 (4G) which is the most generous mobile broadband plan right now. Trumps M1 and ST's 2GB plans any day - unless you don't need that much...
