I used to work in a headphone shop, so may or may not be relevant.

As I frequent Sim Lim Square, despite it's reputation, here's what I'm going to share about buying the right speakers for your set-up at home.

Ask Yourself:
1) Am I using it for music, movie/gaming or casual usage

If music, invest in a 2.1ch.
If movie/gaming, opt for a 5.1/7.1ch
If casual, a 2.0, usb or bluetooth will be a good buy

Ask yourself:
2) Do I have a stereo or 5.1/7.1ch?

If stereo (sound-on-board), opt for a 2.1ch, usb or bluetooth
If 5.1/7.1ch (sound-on-board) or specialist sound card, 5.1/7.1ch speakers.

Ask Yourself:
3) Walk into a shop, DO NOT ask the salesperson to RECOMMEND to you what's BEST.

YOU ARE THE BEST JUDGE OF WHAT YOU LIKE, DON'T ASK FOR THEIR OPINION.

For example,

I walked into a shop once at SIM LIM. The salesperson uses quite a novel approach.
He asked what music i listen to and whether I lean more towards BASS, MIDS or TREBLE.
When I replied that I'm more of a BASS junkie, he asks whether I prefer PUNCHY or BOOMY/DEEP BASS.

This is what make this salesperson so unique. He bothers to ask about the musical preference of the customer. Apparently, I learnt from him that he loves listening to music and he feels that appreciation of music is a must when selecting GOOD speakers. He's more humble than I am, that's for sure.

Walking into a high-fidelity audiophile shop at Adelphi, a professional-looking Apple shop, I find myself wondering if I can find a better salesperson than one who knows what he is doing. Apparently, he did admit that he learns quite a lot by engaging with his customers, something which I used to loathe simply because I cannot visualise myself serving someone who does not share the same sentiments as me.

As a service staff, I find myself quite enamoured by this young man who was able to explain the differences in which speakers i could go for on the proviso that i listen by choosing what's best for myself, something which no doubt i can find out by myself, if I bother to try doing that.

I was so impressed that I find myself purchasing the Logitech Z553 even though it's not recommended for bass. I didn't know my bass well, apparently, as I seemed to prefer percussion over the boomy bass I so decided that I would like.

His virtuoso performance has enthralled me, to the point that I discover new things about myself that I never knew that it existed.

There are many shops selling this speaker but none of the staff can explain it as well as this young man and I applaud him for his honesty, professionalism and courtesy in helping me to pick out what's best for me, by making me listen to the music and not merely 'hearing' the music.

You should have no problems seeking out this gem of a find. I find myself appreciating his service more so than his technical expertise. He has a wicked playlist too comprising of 320kbps high-fidelity bossa nova, classical, slow rock, etc.

A true gem indeed, and he's the reason why this shop simply ticks.

cheers :)
