Congratulations to national shuttler Loh Kean Yew.

We are very proud of him for bringing glory to Singapore and placing our tiny nation on the world map again after swimmer Yip Pin Xiu's recent success at this year's Tokyo Paralympic Games.

What was most stunning to me was the way Loh showed off the Singapore flag on his jersey and kissed it after winning his match. This is a testament to how proud he is to be a Singaporean after having come here from Penang in his teens.

I thank the foreign talent that our sporting fraternities have nurtured over the years for their relentless efforts to fight against the odds and put Singapore on the sporting world map.

Loh Kean Yew teach us that the PAP was right in pursuing their Foreign Talent policy

See, if we dun accept FTs, they will instead be competing against us, taking away trophies, titles, honours from us sinkies

Now is the time to celebrate Singapore first ever male badminton world champion

Born in Penang, Malaysia, Loh is the youngest son with three elder brothers.[30] He played badminton at age seven in primary school but dropped the sport after being made fun of. He picked up badminton once again at ten and within six months, he was in the Penang state team.[31]

In 2010, a year after his third brother Loh Kean Hean came to Singapore, he permanently moved to Singapore at the age of 13 after he received a scholarship from the Singapore Badminton Association (SBA), and was educated at the Singapore Sports School.[30][32] He added that he did not regret this decision, saying that Singapore had given him all the support that he needed.[33] He also stated that his goal is to eventually win an Olympic gold medal for Singapore in badminton.[34]

Loh's elder brother, Loh Kean Hean, is also a member of the Singapore national badminton team.[35]

Loh's breakthrough will easily rank among Singapore's greatest sporting feats, which include swimmer Joseph Schooling's 100m butterfly gold at the Rio Olympics in 2016, as well as Feng Tianwei, Wang Yuegu, Sun Beibei, Li Jiawei and Yu Mengyu's "Miracle in Moscow", when they upset mighty China to win the World Team Table Tennis Championships in 2010.
Fu Mingtian claimed the last of the nation's three SEA Games golds when she won the women's singles in 2011, while Li Li remains its only Commonwealth Games champion after winning the women's singles in 2002.
