issued with Optical Network Router:sad::sad::sad::sad::sad:
Sadly the case, I had to relocate my ONR to my parent's house then sign up another 10Gbps plan just to get the new ONT (to use with upcoming stuff at UWC tomorrow ;)).

Currently, my 10Gbps plan only gets 3-4gigs only during peak hours 8pm-12am so I wonder if that's going to be worse with more 5Gbps users.

I literally just signed up for the 10Gbps plan for my parents/brother yesterday and noticed Starhub has a brand new 5Gbps plan for $45.

Looks like a pretty good deal if you don't need the absolute fastest speeds. However, hardware wise you'll still need mostly 10Gbps Router/Switches because 5Gbps isn't that common.
Wonder is it 5 x 1gbps 🤣

The major problem is the use of an XGS-PON ONR and not ONT.

Consumer routers with dual 10G port actually have quite some limitations when it comes to 10G Fibre Internet (heavily depending on the NAT acceleration because of the weak CPU). Things will be a bit better for them if it is 5Gbps. So it makes sense to come out with 5Gbps plan. This is especially true if the router has dual or more 2.5G LAN ports available.

The use of an ONR is a bummer for power users though. I guess they will change to an ONT later. Now they want to clear the stock of Nokia all-in-one ONR.

SH clearing stocks liao:spin:...
Yes, they gave me the impression that they are. It is also a good idea to clear it off and in future user will get a better router and move on. The drawback for this plan is user will still need a 10Gbps LAN adaptor in order to get one computer on 5 Gbps speed. Many having some issues when using the ONR for 10 Gbps but for 5Gbps, it should be ok. Hopefully SH will work with TP-Link to improve the features of their firmware in their router. Then it will be ok for user.

No need to have 10G NIC already in this case, there are a few USB 3.1/3.2 to 5Gbe adapter which should be much cheaper than the TB3 10Gbe network adapter.

Unfortunately they're all capped by USB 3.1 speeds and USB overhead so they're mostly limited to 3+Gbps which is not so great value compared to cheapish 2.5Gbps adapters.

I also noticed many of them are out of stock or EOL recently (Sabrent and QNAP which I was considering). Hopefully that means new 3.2 Gen 2 ones coming to market.

Good point.

Ugreen seems to offer one 5Gbe adapter as well but now seems to be discontinued as well.

Hopefully Starhub will be able to offer ONT in the future, then people can use cheaper routers like Xiaomi BE10000 (RMB 1599). Then you can treat Starhub 5Gbps plan as either one 5Gbpe line or two 2.5Gbps lines since Xiaomi BE10000 has one 10G WAN/LAN port, one 10G SFP+ WAN/LAN port and quad 2.5G ports.
https://www.mi.com/xiaomi-routers/10000/specs

In that case, you do not really need to have USB to 5G adapter either. USB to 2.5G adpter, or PCIE 2.5G adapters are quite cheap. 2.5G switch is also quite cheap now.

Wonder is it 5 x 1gbps 🤣

Take note it comes with one 10G capable ONR.
So you can use it as single 5Gbps line.

The Nokia XGS-PON all-in-one ONR has 1x 10G LAN port, 3x 1G LAN ports and WiFi 6 (AX6000) Mesh support. If you do not mind using ONR, this is a decent plan at S$45 per month.

If you look at the Starhub website, they got rid of 500Mbps plan and 2Gbps plan. Now they only offer 1Gbps, 5Gbps and 10Gbps plan for Broadband Only Plan (no TV bundle).
https://www.starhub.com/personal/broadband.html

Strangely they still list 2Gbps Homehub+ plan at S$111.97 per month along with 10Gbps Homehub+ plan at S$110.97 per month. I guess they will soon get rid of the 2Gbps Homehub+ plan and maybe replace it with 5Gbps Homehub+ plan.

Discussion here: Asus ROG GT-AXE16000 -- you need to disable quite some FW features to get about 8.2Gbps.

Eevn for Ubiquiti UDM Pro and UDM SE (small enterprise grade router), you need to disable IDS/IPS. If not the throughput is only at 3.5Gbps.
