I use yahoo email with Win XP sp 3. But I access and send my emails via Outlook Express. I have in and out emails going back several years and they are all in a sub sub sub folder known as "Outlook Express" within the "Local Settings". The size of the Outlook Express folder is getting larger by the day and is now about 700mb, excluding those older ones that I have archived outside the folder. Is there a limit on the size of the Outlook Express folder?

I prefer not to archive the emails outside the folder as they can't be read unless I transfer them back to the Outlook Express folder.

Another question relates to my thumb drive. I access as well as save files many times a day over the years. Is there a limit to the accessing and saving of files in the thumb drive before the drive kaput?

Many thanks.

Size limit of Outlook folder is 2gb per folder. Anything larger than that, the mails cannot come in nor can you send out mails.

You can create many sub folders within the OE as your total is only 700mb.

As for flash drives, it depends on the frequency of read/write that you do and also the type and quality of chips that is inside the drive. It can range from 100k to a few million read/writes.

Flash drives are relatively cheap nowadays. If data is important to you, get branded drives and not those China made ones, which could be using rejected chips with reduced lifespan.

TS, if you can't afford to lose those data in the thumb drive, backup to another thumb drive or media before it kaput on you.

Thanks for all the response.

Once a while I would copy my data from thumb drive to my laptop hdd in case my thumb drive kaput. As for data in OE folder, I do the same by copying the folder to my thumb drive.

Since it's yahoo mail.. aren't the emails also in yahoo server anyway, even though u use Outlook for access convenience ?

You can still access through the Web isn't it?

Yes all in mails will be in in yahoo server as well as in my OE. But I dont know how much in mails can be kept in yahoo server as I have in mails going back more than 10 years.

For out mails, only mails sent through yahoo server will be kept but mails sent out using OE are not in yahoo server.

I have another question seeking answers from expert here.

Example - when I open my window explorer, I will have a listing of folders and files. I noted that I could have files in blue color text instead of the normal black. How can I have files listed in blue (or any other color) instead of black?

yahoo mail currently gives 1TB of space.
It also doesn't matter how old your mails are... as long as storage limit is not exceeded, the mails will be there.

As for sent mail, i think there is an option somewhere in outlook to save outgoing messages on the server.
Alternatively, you may create a new folder and put your older unsaved sent messages there.. but i'm not sure whether outlook express can sync the folder with yahoo mail that way though. (Hint: Use IMAP instead of POP3)

For the current size of the folder in outlook, have you tried compressing the mails?

Under OE, I chose to leave message in server unless deleted.

But when opening emails under yahoo, I can see no more than 180 mails in the Inbox, whereas under OE, the list of emails in Inbox, go in thousand.

Anther point in using OE is that when I choose to delete an email from the server, the deleted email from the server would still be in my Inbox and Sent OE folder. In other words, I am still able to keep my emails even though they are deleted from the server.

Compressing mails, yes, but doesn't help.

Your Deleted folder is already 2GB. That's why messeges deleted remains in the inbox and sent folders.

If I am not mistaken, blue text are compressed folders. Black text are normal folders.

Sorry dont understand. My deleted folder in OE is nil as I cleared it regularly. The messages in my server is checked to clear automatically after 30 days, if not deleted.

Note I want the messages to remain in my inbox and sent folders of OE and that's exactly what I wanted and got after deleting the message from the server.

No blue text is not for compressed folders. Anyway, I am asking about files in color text, not folder and I need solution.

For info, I usually send emails using my home desktop (or rather laptop that I dont port around) and sometimes on laptop 1 (personal laptop) or laptop 2 (office laptop) that I port around.

All incoming emails is not a problem as I can view them in my desktop, laptop 1 and laptop 2 using OE as well as through yahoo platform.

But when I send emails using OE from desktop, the sent emails will not be shown in the OE folders of laptop 1 and laptop 2. Same if the emails were sent from laptop 1, it will not be shown as "Sent Items" in the others. This is not a problem as I have a way (though cumbersome) of merging or consolidating the sent emails from laptop 1 and laptop 2 with the "Sent Items" under OE in my desktop which is my main data store. By doing this, it would appear that all the emails were sent in time order from my desktop. That's neat and complete in one single file - Sent Items.dbx

But when I send emails using yahoo platform, I dont know how to merge the sent emails with the "Sent" emails in my desktop. Hence, I avoid sending emails using yahoo platform unless I don't have my laptop with me, like when I go to a friend office or house or in public. Of course, I can cc or bcc but that wouldn't and couldn't appear as "Sent Items" in my desktop.

Use IMAP and configure your IMAP client to store sent mails into the corresponding Sent IMAP folder. The problem you describe is inherently a POP3 behaviour.

While I can understand where you are coming from, that causes problems in data consistency across multiple devices. What is in the server is different from what is in laptop1, which is also different in laptop2 :s22:

I would choose to avoid this issue altogether, rather than trying to merge here and there, which can be time-consuming and confusing.

Use IMAP, keep data consistent throughout.
If you really no longer want an email such that you delete it off the server, why would you want to keep it in the laptop?
Just put it in another folder if you want to archive it.

This way, you no longer need to trouble yourself backing up here and there so frequently too. Yahoo has it's own backup for it's servers, although it's also a good idea to backup one copy locally every now and then.
