Roughly how long can the battery last before it starts swelling? Thanks.

we have seen people use ip4 and never swelled till 5s release.

lithium usually last between 2~3 years depending on how the user charge.

does this happen because like to put on direct cable plugged in and on all the time, when laptop is on/off?

no


it is a consumer product. it is more you heng or you suay.

the probability of swelling increases with time and usage. not how you use it.

the macbook actually controls the charging, so don't have to worry about constantly plugging it in.
