From movieweb.com:

Actor Bruce Campbell took to his Twitter account today to answer some of his fans' questions about The Evil Dead remake he is producing with Sam Raimi, Robert G. Tapert, and new director Federico Alvarez. Much to the chagrin of many fans, though, Bruce Campbell revealed that his iconic character Ash will not be present in the remake. Here are two of his tweets below from this afternoon.

When we spoke with Bruce Campbell at Comic-Con 2011, the actor indicated there may be a possibility he could make a cameo appearance in The Evil Dead, although he would not divulge any specifics. It is possible that he could be featured as a different character besides Ash, but it seems we won't positively know for quite some time. Bruce Campbell also said that the remake will begin production in early 2012.

haha ... it's not like there was some power acting going on in the original Evil Dead. I think most actors can play that role quite competently :D ... haha don't flame me for saying this ...

From comingsoon.net:

Very soon, filming will commence on Evil Dead, Fede Alvarez's remake of the Sam Raimi film starring Bruce Campbell. Recently, the redo - which saw Diablo Cody coming in to make a few revisions to the script - faced a bit of a casting switcheroo.

Lily Collins (Mirror Mirror, Priest) dropped out and Jane Levy stepped in.

The Insider spoke with the latter about the film and below you'll find out what she had to say about the project and a brief, spoilery bit from Bruce Campbell himself.

"I'm so excited," , she said. "I'm a big fan of the original. To me it's the scariest movie, ever. But this one is really different. They've changed it a lot, but it's still a pretty gory movie. My mom probably can't see it. As for the tone, I think the humor in the first one came from the special effects of the time. I don't know that they meant it to be funny...this one is not funny. It's definitely dark."

The outlet also spoke to Campbell, who serves as a producer on the film. And while he didn't necessarily say anything new, he did confirm the evil trees will be back this time and "They're not terribly well-behaved this time either," he said.

Evil Dead will shoot in New Zealand for Sony. Lou Taylor Pucci co-stars. Expect more casting news soon.

Check out the red band trailer below. Looks like the remake focuses more on the blood and gore and less on the black humour. And there's no Ash either.

i will be biased.
more gore and blood = another brainless remake
and no Ash character - fail.
No black humour. fail.
"Drag Me To Hell" fail.
haha. i am biased.

btw, there is this one actor that has some Bruce Campbell/Ash characteristics - Craig Bierko (also from Boston Legal). Saw him in a "Elementary" episode.

I still have my doubts with The Evil Dead remake as it seems to lack the dark humour that made the original so unique. The remake will be for fans of the slasher/horror genre and this one will be a guaranteed gore-fest!

Critics Consensus: (65% fresh rating at rottentomatoes.com)

With Evil Dead and Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn, Sam Raimi pulled off a heady mix of over-the-top gore and subversive humor. Critics say this new Evil Dead doesn't come close to matching its classic predecessors, but it's a visceral, smarter-than-average frightfest that will impress gorehounds (and churn the stomachs of more sensitive types). When a group of teenagers in a remote cabin inadvertently summon demonic forces, they're left to fend off all sorts of unimaginable evils -- including each other. The pundits say Evil Dead lacks the sick wit that made the originals so compelling, but it's an efficient, merciless piece of work that manages to carve out a style all its own.

Anyone caught evil dead? how was it? nice?

Liz caught it today. It's bloody and nice though not as nice as the old classic but still not too bad. Worth the $$$$$. A lot of people scream and Eeeeeeeeeee in the movie. Enjoyable movie.

It's hard to live up to one's tagline, especially when it's screaming the words "most terrifying", because it's building expectations sky high, only for it to come out a little bit underwhelming, despite having cult classic pedigree backing it. Evil Dead is that continuation of the Sam Raimi Evil Dead films that had Bruce Campbell in the starring role, but this installment is all seriousness without the camp, which made it a little bit dreadful to sit through, and an exercise in excessiveness.
