Local TikToker Ong Yi Ting recently sparked a dialect-speaking trend on the platform.

Local TikToker Ong Yi Ting creates unique Hokkien content that has led to a large following

Since her first viral post in May 2021, there have been many other TikTokers who have jumped on the dialect-speaking trend

She has even had tie-ups with government agencies, who use her platform to promote their initiatives

While many of their peers have little to no proficiency when it comes to the use of Hokkien or Teochew, Gen Zs Ong Yi Ting and Gareth Quek are making a keen effort to learn and even promote their dialects. And they are not the only ones.

Co-founder of learndialect.sg Eugene Lee says he has seen a ten to 20 per cent increase in the number of youths enrolling for dialect lessons since the Covid-19 pandemic.
