A star-studded international cast which includes Gianna Jun (My Sassy Girl), Simon Yam, Kim Soo-hyun, Angelica Lee, Lee Jeong-jae, Kim Yoon-seok, Kim Hye-soo, Kim Hae-sook, Oh Dal-soo proves to be invincible as it broke the Korean box-office record to be the biggest movie of the year!

Synopsis from movieXclusive.com:

In order to let things cool down from their latest heist, Popeye and his group of thieves go to Macao on a job. But the mastermind behind this job is none other than Popeye’s old partner Macao Park, who escaped with 68kg of gold several years ago on their last job together. Macao Park brought Chinese thieves as well but little did they know what Macao Park planned for each one of them. But his plan takes an unexpected turn when Popeye brings Pepsi, an old flame of Macao Park, to settle the old score. The thieves’ target is a $20 million diamond known as ‘Tear of the Sun’, kept safely away in a casino, brought there to be sold by a notorious Chinese fence. While working together to steal this fabled diamond, they all have their own agenda to keep the diamond for themselves. But who will succeed and live to see another day?

Movie opens 27 Sept.

The Thieves may look like Ocean's Eleven from the onset, with its star studded ensemble cast from South Korea and Hong Kong combining forces for the most parts in what would be a casino and jewel caper. But instead of having one primary heist as the central focus for all the characters, The Thieves present a whole lot more, used to introduce the different team's capabilities, and providing plenty of twists and turns as the story progressed. In short, it was a real treat and a wild ride to have the usual plot developments of the genre, with the betrayals and conflicting motivations all clashing together, and delivered with pin point perfection.

Often touted as the Korean Ocean's Eleven, The Thieves features a star-studded ensemble from both Korea and Hong Kong and a fun jewel heist in the first half of the movie. And that's where the comparison ends. Like most Korean movies, it takes an unexpected (or expected) tonal shift and becomes darker, more violent and devious as the characters' inner motives take over the superficial alliance, leading to betrayals and double-crosses, and proving once and for all that there is no honour among thieves.

The unexpected development of The Thieves is a good thing as it did not rehash the route taken by many heist movies and this is what makes the movie interesting and captivating. It allows the audience to follow through every twist and turn, guessing who is the most scheming and ultimate liar of all while exploring the intricate relationships and dynamics of a gang of thieves whose motivation and motives may not be so obvious at the beginning. However, having too many subplots will only make the movie seem bloated, especially the one involving the mysterious criminal Wei Hong which steers the movie to its violent and destructive path. Also, the movie is bogged down by having too many characters vying for screen time and you may not get the satisfactory resolution for each characters in the end.

While The Thieves is flawed, it is still a solid entertaining heist and caper movie which offers plenty of eye candy from its attractive cast and a fair amount of action, humour and deceit, thus sealing its status as the biggest movie in Korean history.

Haha, just watched it again and managed to understand it finally. Really a nice show but i guess not very popular here. This is definitely worth the movie ticket price and a DVD for keep.
