Hey all,

This is Don. Just wanted to share my four and a half cents on being well dressed in Singapore and also get some opinion from other peeps like you guys.

It seems that there is this upcoming trend of the "gentleman in suit", where you see a dude on Instagram with a finely tailored suit, good looking shoes and a dappered hair cut. Frankly, i feel it's a bit pretentious and borderline "douche-y"

Don't get me wrong, every man needs a fine suit, good looking shoes and a dappered haircut but it just seems a little overexposed nowadays.

I don't need to wear standard "office wear" to work as i'm an entrepreneur (fashion brand) so i don't really wear suits or ties. More of a T-shirt and jeans kinda guy (but i'm big on good looking dress shoes to pair with my jeans)

Firstly, being well dressed is different from being fashionable. The well dressed man values simplicity and authenticity. He does not stand out but he will always be noticed.

Fashion comes and go but being well dressed is classic. Fashion is confrontational for the sake of it and push boundaries just for the sake of it.

After researching and being in the fashion business, these are just 3 main principles i feel on being a well dressed man in Singapore.

1.) FIT IS KING.

As long as your clothes fit, you will look decently good.

Fit > Colour > Brands

2.) Match Your Colours

Don't wear more than 3 colors in your outfit. And neutral colors (black, white, grey, etc) are your good friends.

The one core color trick is perfect for every man. Just wear one non-neutral color and the rest be neutral.

E.g. Burgundy(core) top, Navy(neutral) Pants, Black(neutral) shoes.

3.) It's the Whole Package

For men, you only have 4 things to watch out for: Top, Bottom, Shoes, Accessories (optional).

Every single one is important. You cannot ignore them. Shoes seems to be the one thing that most men overlook. It really ruins your look if you're all decked out in nice fitting clothes but your shoes are all beaten up.

Do share your thoughts and questions about being well dressed in Singapore or if you disagree in any way!

Think those Guys in the shoe thread here dress really well.

Indeed. As pretentious as this sounds and please note that i'm extremely biased towards shoes, shoes do bring out an outfit quite a bit.

It's the one place where you don't have to go neutral color but can get a little bold.

Being well dressed is a lot simpler than it seems. (and a lot cheaper)

They are delusional.

Hahaha, you don't have to spend thousands on a shoe for it to look good!

Around $300 to $400 if you shop right is enough to get you a pair of good looking shoes that last quite long.

Rather than $100 to $200 sub par shoes that doesnt even look that good and break down after the rain touches it.

does it matter?

u can wear a nice pair of loafers, nicely tailored shirt, tailored chinos..

next to a guy in a pair of slippers, oversized tee and board shorts, who just stepped out of his ferrari

no question who looks more "fashionable"

Of course it matters.

Sure...a ferrari would add a couple million points to how "well dressed" you are.

But i believe you're missing an important point of being well dressed. It's for yourself.

Look good, feel good. And then you're more likely to go out there and focus on your bigger goals and ambition!

Maybe even get a ferrari if that's what you're looking for.

But then again, why spend that amount of money when a couple hundreds is enough to make you feel and look good!

The girls who flock to the ferrari guy will be flocking to him because of his money.

Sure, i would imagine the attention would feel pretty darn good but it not all just about random chicks flocking to you

my man my man!

As a singaporean dude, i know too well about some of the mentality of Singaporean girls.

Reminds me of one of my first few dating experience where i suggested eating carrot cake at a kopi tiam, only to have her say "she's sick" at the very last minute.

Haha. that was hilarious!

Fit is king, to a certain extend. If you bui bui with well fitting clothes also lose to fit zai in less fitting clothes.

Sent from HTC One_M8 using GAGT

Well..if you bui bui with well fitting clothes, you would look much better than you bui bui with poor fitting clothes.

Fit is KING is one of those principles which you can't go wrong. When in doubt, go slim fit as it typically looks better for most men.

Most bui bui guys would prefer their fit to be slightly loose but honestly, a well and slim fit really looks much better regardless.

Another quick pointer!

The one core color trick. To Always Match Your Colours in EVERY Outfit

NO MORE THAN 3 COLORS

Your entire outfit, shoes, pants, belt, top, jacket, cap, dog, etc should not have more than 3 colors.

If you have a red shirt, navy pants and brown shoes, please do not put on a green belt.

You want to cap the maximum number of colors at 3 for your entire outfit.

This is a simple enough rule.

HAVE AT LEAST ONE NEUTRAL COLOR

Neutral colors are black, white, tan and grey. All neutral is a safe and sophisticated look. In general, neutral colors are your friends.

They are safe colors that will match well with any colors so you do not have to worry about your colors clashing.

Make sure your neutral plays well though…

light pants with light shoes, dark belts with dark shoes, etc. You get the point.

However, having too many neutrals might look dull and boring. This is when you add in one core color.

THE ONE CORE COLOR PRINCIPAL

Core colors are brown, navy, yellow, burgundy, green, purple, etc.

They are basically colors that are not neutral. They can either be warm (red, yellow, orange) Or cool (green, blue, violet)

One core color, together with your neutrals and a good fit is more than enough to make you well dressed.

Of course, you are allowed to wear more than one core color. But then you have to worry about matching them and ensuring they do not clash.

EXAMPLES

Khaki pants (neutral), burgundy shirt (core) and Brown shoes (Neutral)
Blue Jeans (neutral), Dark green polo shirt (core) and black shoes (neutral)
White T-Shirt (neutral), Tan Khakis (neutral) and a burgundy shoe (core)
