Thecus N4520 review

I got a review set from Convergent, and also a bunch of HGST drives from them. So without further fluff, here's the details.

Packaging

The stuff the package came with. RJ45 cable, screws, etc.

The unit
This is your Atom equipped NAS unit with 2GB RAM, and it comes with many useful ports, including a HDMI and SPDIF output, something not commonly found on NAS units. There are 2x USB 2.0 ports, and 1x USB 3.0 port located behind the unit.

Tray for the drives. Straight forward, easy to to screw the drives in.

The Hitachi drives that will be used for testing. Three of these drives provided are the HGST Ultrastar 7K4000 with 64MB cache, 4TB in size. Specifications: Ultrastar 7K4000 | HGST, a Western Digital company

Installing the drives back in was smooth as one can expect it to be. Just slot it in, and push the clip in place. The indicator lights are great, and the LCD provides good information about the health, status, etc.

Software

It comes a small client, and the interface provides very little information. I was fortunate enough that my NAS was found without much issues on my network, but an expanded UI would be very much appreciated.

Setting up was a breeze, and you’re given a few options to setup the drives.

Everything was setup very quickly within the hour, and I was greeted with this interface. It feels a little bare, but very functional. I would love to see tighter menus if possible, like Date/Time being put into General instead of its own icon, but that’s just a personal preference.

Benchmark

This was the result from the combination of the 3x HGST drives with the N4520. Decent performance for a unit designed to be used in a SOHO/Home environment.

Conclusion
Very well designed unit with good balance of performance and outputs. It is interesting that Thecus has included HDMI and SPDIF outputs for the unit, something not found commonly on current generation of NAS units. Perhaps this might be something of a standard in future NAS units?
