I apologise if this has been discussed before.
Reason i prefer restore from backup is cos of the mailboxes settings need to key in, music need to reload in, apps settings, preferences etc etc. gonna take ages to redo it from scratch.
is it true or a myth that restoring from backup will bring in "the bad data" and causes lags/crashes to the new phone?
Its a myth. iOS settings are all sandboxed, so unless you save jailbreak settings which alter system files, nothing will make the OS slower when restoring from backup.
I always set up as new. And I do experience better battery life, snappier experience etc.
Just my 2c.
I too set up as new. All my photos I backed up to my external hard drive. I don't have any games anyway so it's ok.
Hmmm.
2 school of thoughts..
It's a Myth. Do what is more comfortable for you.
If you set it up as new, you can arrange your stuff better (decide what you want inside your phone).
just to share..i once upgraded from 4S to 5. Restored from backup.
Everytime I open the Camera app, it will freeze my phone.
Did a hard reset n reset all settings but still same issue.
Guess wad resolved it? Did a full restore and problem went away.
It's not a myth. I also perform a full restore whenever I get a new phone. Especially since I jailbreak most of my devices.

Guess it's different strokes for different folks case then.
Anyway TS, if anything happens, you can just restore and start afresh. Not much extra work in the process there.
When you do a full restore then when you sync with the mac, will the apps, calendars, contacts, reminders will sync with the 'new' iPhone?

whenever a "major" release happens .. i.e. iOS 8.x.x or 9.x.x I always take backup then do a DFU upgrade to the new OS, upgrade iTunes if available and then restore back from the same backup
Its a total ridiculous nonsense to NOT restore from backup ... all the issues that people have had in past is due to apps not being ready for the new version of iOS ... so for example when iOS7 launched but apps were not ready and you restored from backup. Of course, issues arose from that ...
Back up to iCloud and restore your new phone from iCloud. It is as good as setting up a new phone but with everything installed nicely for you, with minimum hassle.
Thank you all for the replies.
Can restore everything EXCEPT photos?
I use iTunes to restore from backup.
From ip4 to 4s to 5 to refurbished ip5.... I always restore, never setup as new.
So far no issues.
Maybe i will do a restore then.
How do i restore everything EXCEPT photos. Wanna start the new phone with new collection of photos.
