Toshiba laptop error

Laptop: Toshiba Protege R830

I bought my Toshiba laptop from smu back in 2011 when I entered uni. I was in smu on Monday (I have not brought my laptop to smu since graduating in 2015). Somehow it detects the smu network and I was not able to login with my password (password 1). Then I recalled that I changed the password for my smu email awhile back and maybe the password has synced with my laptop. I tried with this password (password 2) and got this error "You cannot log on because the logon method you are using is not allowed on this computer. Please see your network administrator for more information". I went to see the IT helpdesk and the person mentioned that the school network has been configured in the way that windows 7 machines are not allowed (my laptop is still running on windows 7 OS). This issue persisted even when I'm at home and away from the school's network. My laptop has been functional and there are documents that I have not backed up. Could any kind soul help?? I'm really at wits end.

Documents can be backed up to an external hard drive. You should make a backup before attempting any upgrade since it might fail.

Perhaps it's time to upgrade it to Windows 10? The feedback by the helpdesk is vague, but it is likely to be security/authentication related. You could try these steps to see if you can get a Windows 10 upgrade for free: https://www.zdnet.com/article/heres-how-you-can-still-get-a-free-windows-10-upgrade/

Or try Linux if for some reason you do not wish to pay for the Win 10 upgrade (IIRC it was free for a period) and you still wish to use the laptop and not replace it.

Thanks for the reply. The issue is that I can't even log in to my laptop now. My essential documents are on Google drive luckily but it is just a headache for the other documents in the laptop.

Ah. It should be a simple process then. Just physically remove the hard disk drive and put it in an enclosure, then copy out the files.

I'm not technically proficient in this area. Would the documents still be locked in hard disk with a password or sorts??

Unless it’s encrypted. Eg. With bitlocker / SecureDoc etc
You can just remove the hdd and put into enclosure to function as external hdd

Otherwise you can try to create an admin login ID and login from there

Don’t need win 7
You can download win 10 into USB thumb drive

The main purpose is not to install OS, but to login command prompt without login

Just need to ensure you don’t accidentally override your files via OS installation

Upgrade your laptop OS from win 7 to win 10 if it has enough memory and speed.

PCs/Machines that does not support Windows 10 recommend not to upgrade.
Some of the PC will not work properly under Windows 10 especially
if there are no drivers.

Some may argue with me regarding this statement but the only exception
are PCs that run Windows 8.1 not Win 7.
TS you can try upgrade to Windows 10 but you will risk:

- Some hardware may not work properly
- Slow
- Random BSOD

In regards to your issue what the IT guy said is not correct.
This error:

"

Is not because of Windows 7 which is misleading.
It can be few reasons:

- To join school network, you need Windows 7 Pro to join domain.
Windows 7 Home cannot join domain as Home is intended for home use.


- Have to join the school network domain than create a user account using the domain.

TS I hope you understand what is the issue, even if you upgrade to Windows 10 it will not solve the issue.
