Would you please share what was the most scenic/memorable medium/long distance train journey you took?

Please - no Trans-Siberian - it is a category of its own, not interested in it.

1) Guangzhou-Haikou K1167 - train ferry!
2) Glacier Express - sheer scenery
3) Haytai-Sungei Kolok- lovely countryside and also restive Thai south, where stations resemble bunkers

Took a 12 hour train ride from Danang to Hanoi in the sleeper train once. Hard bed but it’s not too bad.

Train ride was quite rough with a lot of sounds and bumps.

Cockroaches crawling around, slight ignorant/racist tourist who left halfway and a friendly Vietnamese came up on his way to work. Nice Vietnamese coffee on the train, random local lady came up to sell her rice cakes(?). It’s alright.

Scenery so so only. I’m short so enough space for me, can’t say the same for my 1.8m Friend.

Is not the ride from Da Nang to Hoi An one with one of the best sceneries? But for you it would be behind already.

The Malayan Tiger, from JB to Tumpat and back aka the Jungle Railway. Carriages were from Japan. Took the first service train in 2012. The staff at the ticket office don't know how to sell and issue the tickets!

Amtrak's California Zephyr, from Chicago to Emeryville, 3924km. Duration 51hours but in reality, much longer than that! Taken last July.

I have done the Trans Siberia rail too. I'll say the California Zephyr is better than the Trans Siberia in terms of scenery and train facilities.

Train/Rail journeys vary in length, so some are scenic in just a short portion, while others may be more scenic in certain season etc. So here's my list and my experiences :

1. The famous Oslo-Bergen is really quite nice and but very popular as part of the Norway in a Nutshell itinerary. I was however, more blown away by the Arctic Circle Train from Narvik to Abisko :
http://blog.roving-light.com/2013/04/narvik-to-abisko-along-arctic-circle.html

I was literally glued to the window like 3/4 of the time. I have to admit though, that I like winter scenery, so I am biased and list this 1st.

2. My next favourite season is autumn, and I went on the Denali Star train from Anchorage to Fairbanks, as well as Anchorage down to Seward during that time. The portion near the Denali national park was especially fabulous during that time. One of those classic rail journey if you are going Alaska.

3. The Qinghai-Tibet railway is also very famous, and the scenery also super beautiful. However, the scenic parts are at the very high altitudes, and so many may suffer AMS. So some may not be able to appreciate the beauty with a pounding headache (or worse, vomiting). Luckily, my headache was relatively ok....

4. The Gokteik Viaduct in Myanmar is more "memorable" than anything - the interesting/scenic part is only one short section. However, the whole journey was super bumpy and rocky, and is my bounciest ride of my life - your bum will hurt cos the seat is a hard wooden bench...

There are of course alot more train rides I've taken, but I guess these are the most "memorable/scenic" so far...

I always find rail a preferred way to travel long distances especially if it takes a route not accessible by vehicles. You can stretch your legs, watch the scenery and it is usually easier to strike up conversations with fellow passengers.

Some of my more memorable rides:

1) China - Chengdu to Lhasa
- Probably my longest train journey at 44 hours. We were worried about AMS as it's our first time to such high altitudes. The oxygen masks on the trains just add to the anxiety. But we were alright and of course, the scenery was beautiful.

2) South Africa - Port Elizabeth to Johannesburg
- Excellent value for money with good scenery, a lot safer and comfortable than I imagined.

3) Myanmar - Yangon to Bagan
- Bumpiest train ride I every took. I was hoping that I could be strapped onto the bed to make it easier to sleep. It's nice passing through the rural villages seeing kids playing near the tracks. I still remember being sold a bottle of water whose cap was not sealed.

4) Europe - Rome to Sicily
- We had to get onto a train ferry to reach Sicily island!

5) North Korea - Pyongyang to Dandong (China)
- We were just too glad to clear the North Korean customs without our cameras/photos checked and deleted.

6) India - Cochin - Mumbai
- One of the most scenic train journeys in India. I transferred to Mumbai's harbour line wanting to see how bad the peak hour crush can be. But I chickened out and took first class. :p

7) Vietnam - Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh
- Memorable because I fell sick on the train and it was such a long 33 hour ride. The view is supposedly good though.

The china train rides I took more than decade ago were also memorable in the sense that the trains were packed and dirty, toilets were digusting, people were unruly and we sometimes only managed to get no-seats tickets for overnight journeys.

We should do a memorable ferry thread too.

Two of the most incredible scenic train rides
1. Glacier Express - Zermatt to St Moritz. Did this in Winter
2. Bernina Express - Tirano to Chur and Zurich. Did this in Spring
Can't go wrong in any season.

USA Coast to Coast.
NY to Chicago
Chicago to Salt Lake City - Zephyr - San Francisco
Scenic, especially crossing the Rockies but not as good as Switzerland
Got off at SLC for road trip to Yellowstone and Black Hills, rejoined Zephyr a week later

Europe
Berlin - Prague - Budapest - Ljubiana - Trieste - Verona - Milan - Cinque Terre
Every segment is interesting and an adventure, Great cities to visit. Did with Eurail pass but I'd recommend just buying point to point as you go.

Japan
Shinkansen Tokyo to Sapporo
Tokyo to Kyoto
Japan Rail Pass, good value. Great train rides, fast, comfortable, scenic. City to City.

Also did Guangzhou to Beijing but this was in 1984.
Also did Singapore to Kota Baru, Interesting Jungle rail.

seat61 site is a great reference

Overnight Train Rides?

Anyone has recommendation for an overnight train ride in Asia?

Few years back wanted to book the Tokyo - Sapporo overnighter but failed to get the tickets. And shortly after the service was discontinued.

My young daughter loves train so am thinking an overnight journey will be memorable. No need super lux carriages. Simple but clean will be sufficient.

Thanks!

Well, there was mention of JB-Tumpat "Jungle Line". Better yet, Bangkok-Chiangmai 1st class.

Also memorable was the Tangiers- Marrakesh overnighter. I shared a cabin with local folk and they shared their food. Here, sharing food means tearing from the same loaf of bread and drinking from the same cup. I did not think to refuse. There was a Berber girl who appeared more outgoing or Westernised than most- she was in jeans and T-shirt. She offered me sips from her can of Coke. Her outgoing behaviour attracted the attention of local male youths and she was spoken of in whispers and leered at on the passageway. Thankfully, their attention did not extend to me.

Did the Hanoi to Lao Cai overnight. Departs 9.30pm, arrives 5.15am. Pretty comfortable given that it is an old train leftover by the French...

Cairo to Luxor night sleeper. Not much scenery to speak of since mostly at night. Bed was ok but train was old school, rumbling and noisy.

Qinghai to Lhasa night sleeper. Probably missed the best scenery across the highest pass in the dead of night but dawn and morning views of the stark landscape and mountains not bad. Modern smooth train. Luckily not affected by altitude sickness except for some minor achey joints.

NZ Trans Alpine from Christchurch to Greymouth. Fantastic scenery over an afternoon. Very nice although it makes more sense to do this at the start of your trip, otherwise you would have seen similar scenery many times over already.

Ella to Kandy in Sri Lanka. Just a few hours but great views across high tea plantations and plateau. No special viewing platform so just enjoy from your seat, which is comfortable.
