Hello, my pc recently started to have several problems. Applications would keep "not responding", everything is becoming very sluggish and sometimes the whole system crashes. This is what the screen looks like, no bsod.

The system is slightly over a year old, built in end 2014. I am suspecting its the GPU from the lines on the screen and also since its about 2.5 years old now, bought in july 2013. But I am also suspecting its the HDD since recently it has been making weird grinding noises pretty loudly. It is still under warranty till november this year.

Can anyone share their opinions? Thanks! Was thinking of doing a clean reinstall of the OS.

You definitely need to replace the HDD since it is making grinding noises.

You can test whether the GPU is faulty by using integrated graphics. If that works and your GPU doesn't, then you know the GPU is bad.

Hmm I only suspected the gpu going bad because of the weird lines when the system crashes, or do the lines not indicate anything? HDD definitely makes weird noises that im sure.

The weird lines do indicate a possible GPU issue but troubleshoot one item at a time .... fix the HDD problem first.

Alright thanks Koenig168, I'll get a new ssd to replace it soon. Hopefully that solves the problem.

Do disconnect your old HDD when doing OS setup on SSD. After first reboot, you can connect back.

Thanks for the advice jtjt00. Won't it cause the system to crash again if its connected?

Of course, it won't cause system crash. But your boot info will not created in the SSD but modify in your HDD instead. Once you remove the HDD, your machine can't boot.

Hmm it shows the health status as caution, same as my wd my book 4tb. I realise when my hdd makes the grinding noise is also the same time when applications start to lag a bit.

That mean yr hdd is going to die soon, if still got warranty, rma them.

Im not sure if thats entirely accurate because I used it last year when I just got my wd my book and it also showed caution even though it was brand new.
