Yes, soon. Expected to hit Okinawa on 7 July. But now a lot of prefectures are experiencing extreme showers. Be prepared for suspension of train services.

What I did was to find a large shopping mall (usually either a dept store or Tokyu Hands or Yodobashi Camera store or BIC camera store) to spend a few hours shopping while the typhoon is supposed to go past the city I'm in. Then by the time I'm done with shopping, the typhoon will be over. That's what I did when I was at Kyoto on a typhoon day.

Try to come up with a few backup options in case of heavy rain/typhoon hitting some days of your trip. Indoor attractions, large shopping malls, and if trains are suspended, then maybe look up indoor attractions/shopping malls near your hotel so that the day won't be totally wasted.

this period also very common for both rainy and typhoon season.

Better to choose late autumn or spring, quieter weather then.

Hard to say. We encountered passing typhoon in early April back in 2012. It poured continuously for 3 days which we had already bought our TDR passes. All outdoor performances were cancelled.

Even in April this year, we were lucky to get extreme winds and rain showers. Train services were suspended. Some outdoor attractions were closed too. Really fated. :s13:

WLE, we had good days for most trips as well. Early April in Kyoto, mid April (kena chaotah due to sunny days) in Takayama, June in Hokkaido (wet weather in Tokyo though), late July in Osaka, August (super sunny, 35-37°C) in Tokyo and early November in Tokyo. So overall, it's not too bad.

Not sure which part to visit for next trip - Izu or Kyoto prefecture (outskirts). Hard to travel to secluded places when we don't drive.

Anyway back to the topic - so long as you're not along the coastal areas during typhoons, you'll be fine. At most the inconvenience is rainy days and suspension of public transport.
