If got uni email can get student discount too. Still got shopback 7%.

Actually I just look up Vega 10 vs Mx 150. Seems like mx150 is better leh.

The difference is marginal at best, altho you're right abt that, my bad. Both gpus can handle light titles like DOTA very easily so in that usecase the two gpus are no different, except mx150 laptops are much more expensive than AMD APU laptops.

You wont be able to get a mx150 laptop for 1.1k

Interesting topic.

Was looking at almost the same spec as TS and was gonna decide on the ThinkPad T480S. Happen to chance upon a demo set at Digital Life and was super turned off by the FHD display. Looks washed out and quite dim (although I did not play with the settings to set the brightness). Other than that, everything else was good or at least fits my requirement (the other major turn off being the price).

By the way, my consideration was the Dell XPS 13 (I don’t know why it’s touted as one of the best but the design and thickness isn’t that fantastic IMO), Huawei Matebook X Pro (hard to buy and no SD slot at all but pretty much on top of my list), HP Envy 13 and LG Gram (this one I really like the dual SSD slot but no discrete graphics card).

So, back to the hunt and I’m super curious to see what everyone has to recommend!

I regret paying $2k for my BNINB Latitude 7480.

Should've bought a used Latitude 7450 for <$700.

Buy 2nd hand.

ill recommend Huawei Matebook X Pro if you have the budget, else the ACER which was mentioned is good..

Remember if you need to bring your computer everyday, weight and probably battery life(assume you can skip bringing your charging cable) should be a major consideration.

Intel laptop battery will be much longer than AMD.
Thinkpad T series seems suitable for you but
the high price.

The closest model I can think of Dell Inspiron i7/MX150/SSD+1TB
at $1.5k.
Brand like Dell, HP can extend their warranty for few more years.

I only know Asus laptop warranty cannot be extended.
I would recommend not focusing on searching a laptop for
solidworks.

Solidworks need a laptop that is powerful enough to handle
like Intel H series with prefer a professional graphic.
Intel u series with MX150 can run but since it is intended
for low wattage so it might not handle that well unlike H
series.

Laptop with H series usually are either gaming/mobile workstation.
The weight at 2.5kg will be an disadvantage.
For solid works either on a desktop but not a laptop or Uni
computer lab.

Lenovo can extend ah

Both ux433 / ux430 have coil whine issue. The ux433 tracks seem to have erratic touchpad too. Maybe the newer / cheaper / thicker ux431 would resolve all those issue (its predecessor ux410 seems okay)

i read about the coil whine on ux430. is that still the case? UX431 will be out in Singapore for IT fair? The touchpad is not that big a concern for me cos i usually travel with wireless mouse.

Well they did announce it earlier this year targeting Q1. But who knows when it will be available in SG. The confirmed one is ux433 for it show. If you really want asus, maybe ux533. Better graphic and no coil whine.

Imo the bigger issue with asus is screen res only at 1080p. Mac and matebook are all higher res, hard to comeback after using higher res screen.

if i were you, i will skip the dedicated GPU and not game on my work laptop to prolong the lifespan as you need this laptop for 3-4 years depending on your BSc honours track.

lets talk minimum spec more than enough to complete your coursework
i3/amd
8gb
256gb ssd
~1kg
10h battery (get through a day of lecture without charging)
13" 720p res (your eyes might hurt if you code too much)
3y onsite warranty
usbC / hdmi video output

if you require to run vmware on linux
i5/i7
16gb
512gb ssd
~1kg
10h battery
15" 1080p res

usual suspects are dell hp asus lenovo.
do your math and see which one is the best deal.
splurge now rather than buy a cheap one and waste money on replacement.
