Unauthorised Modification's penalty fee @ A.Lab

With effect of October 2015, any iDevice found to be unauthorised tampered or unit is deemed to be unauthorised modified will be charged with $130 penalty fee without any servicing by A.Lab.

If I'm not wrong it will still be in-effect even after warranty expired. This is because before even getting your Apple products repaired by A.Lab, they will require you to pay $130 upfront as diagnostic fee as the Apple product is no longer under any form of warranty.

If any defects were to be found during diagonstic, an additional charges will be quoted to you depending on the parts which need to be replaced.

I was told about this by a guy at A.Lab Changi City point when getting my MBP screen fixed.

I ever sent in an early 2011 Macbook Pro with SSD and secondary hard disk to A.Labs and they took it and replaced the faulty battery with no questions asked.

Likely it's targeted at those out of warranty, did some unauthorized repair, and then much later back to Apple

Well if Apple gave the instruction to charge this penalty fee then shouldn't other authorised service centres be charging it too? If only A.Lab is charging it then it sounds more like an attempt to earn extra pocket money.

This is a bit unclear. A MacBook is not an "iDevice". It's actually not even clear if an iMac is an "iDevice".

Do you mean desktop Macs and Macbooks? What about a Mac Pro?

To me an iDevice is an iPhone, iPad and iWatch.

A Labs should have consulted lawyers before coming up with such unclear statements.

Definitely will since they're all independent companies. I'm pretty sure next time round when apple opens up their store in here there will be charges applicable too.

They have no legal rights to implement a "penalty" fee as the device is yours, unless you have replaced it with 3rd party parts, and you're sending it in for a repair while it is under warranty. If it is out of warranty, at most, they will charge you a diagnostic fee of sorts and/or reject the repair.

For iPhones, as far as I know, for out of warranty ones, they take in your iPhone and sell you a new refurbished iPhone in most cases instead of repairing.

I think they only do screen, battery and top button repairs, not others.

For Macs, user replaceable parts such as RAM, hard drives or SSDs, and battery does not void the warranty. Only if there are water stains, the water-indicator turns red or signs that the logicboard has been repaired.

It's not that great a place to go for out of warranty repairs anyway.

That's what I'm saying. Unless Apple has instructed ALL its authorised service centres if not then this to me, is just an excuse by A Labs to make more money.
