Now, when i buy laptop, i look for these
1920*1080 screen. A higher resolution screen means you can show more on your laptop. more codes, more words on the same screen compared to the typical 1366*768.
Solid State Hybrid Drive(SSHD). They offer more space than a pure SSD, but faster load than HDD. It is a combination of SSD and HDD.
Also, you may want to get your laptop from US like amazon or Dell US.
Lenovo Flex 2 15.6 (59418262) for work would be good for work, with touchscreen thrown in. cost about SGD900. wait for amazon to stock it again.
Dell Latitude 3540 for gaming cost about SGD1100 with a decent graphic card, no touchscreen though

Got one more noob question to ask..
For NTU, if get a laptop from outside, can I get a copy of MS Office from the school, or have to purchase?

If get laptop from the school, is most of the software needed for schoolwork pre-installed?

School use no need powerful laptops, just get something that is above the requirements the school set. Most important is SSD (or the ability to replace HDD), battery life, screen (1080p is all you need), keyboard and mouse.

You should take a look at the Asus X-Series. It should be able to cover your specs
