HI all,

i am at a crossroad right now and i am thinking between UOL (Banking&finance / Accountancy) or UniSIM (accountancy OR finance).

Can i have some insights into each???
basically, the job prospects and recognition of UOL vs UniSIM.
I do understand that unisim placings are quite limited. (200 placings for all the full time courses this year).

for me, at first i thought of taking UOL because i am eligible for bridging and thus, can finish the course in 2 years. At first i believed that working exp is more impt and i just wanted to finish my degree as soon as possible.

However, i got to know that uniSIM's accountancy is more recognised by the Singapore QP program. made me wonder if UniSIM is more recognised in general. For now, i'm still leaning more towards working in the banking industry in the future and is on contract work right now before my school starts.

please advise [ application window is short :(( ]

if you are thinking of going into UNISIM Just for SQP, that will not be a good decision IMO. SQP is only Singapore based, I rather take ACCA, ICAEW or CA Australia better.

UOL is 100% exam-based and therefore doesn't have coursework like projects or tut discussions. It is all pure lectures only except the intro to econs mod where there are tuts. However, can still form own study groups. UOL is internationally recognised by the way. Ultimately it us up to u to choose whichever course u wanna take. Please do think through carefully and good luck for your studies and future endeavours.

Thanks for the replies. I understand that the UOL system is just lectures and a 100% weightage year-end exam. Also, because of the system it is pretty hard to make new friends as people usually have their own cliques already, etc. What i want to know more is the standings of the two different degrees (uniSIM vs UOL). As in does employers in sg generally classify them as private degrees altogether. Or is uniSIM really more recognised.

If both degrees offer the same amount of opportunity (equality) with regards to entry into a banking job, then i would lean slightly towards UOL as i only have to take 2 years (provided i pass my bridging and all my year '2' modules)

Regards!

I would say unisim is more recognised locally. Being a local degree, you'd have the chance to work in government sector whereas private degree holders and not very accepted there. On top of that, Unisim being local, it is cheaper with the subsidies. Hence you get a better ROI as compared to private degrees. I know its hard to see unisim as the same standard as the other local unis at this point of time. People also had doubts about SMU back then, but in just a few years, it has rose to be on par(locally) as NUS and NTU. You'd regret it if unisim also rises to the same standard in a few years time.

My $0.02. :)

Objectively for both UniSIM and UOL, they are both recognised as the former is a local university recognised by MOE, whilst the latter is established by Royal Charter in the UK, which in turn the same recognition of it is given here.

Subjectively, however, the recognition would depend on the very person hiring you for the job. Being human, there will be bias and preferences, and these extend to the hiring managers/HR. Company A may have had bad experiences with graduates of ABC university, but Company B finds good candidates and workers from ABC university.

It is a bit unbalanced if you are just comparing between UOL and UniSIM, as employers would be selecting graduates from other universities as well (local ones, foreign ones, DL ones, etc.).

But, from my years in the working world, I have seen UniSIM and UOL graduates being hired. After all, UniSIM was given the "endorsement" by the government, and UOL international programmes has been around since 1858 (and not surprisingly, Singapore has one of the highest number of students for the UOL programme).

It's your choice, ultimately.
