upgrading existing Gigabyte B75mHD3 setup?

I currently use a B75M-HD3 board and i3 processor. It's okay but could be faster i think, since i'm starting to do video rendering. I don't need blazing fast speeds but something a bit incremental from now.


The board says it supports 3rd Gen. Intel® 22nm CPUs and 2nd Gen. Intel® Core™ CPUs (LGA1155 socket)

Are all these chips obsolete already? Are there any value for money CPUs in this range, that don't consume too much power when idle, since my computer is idling or used for surfing web pages most of the time?

Sadly yes, but u can get the CPU from 2nd hand buyer.

Value for money I would say amd r3 as they are still quite good in video rendering.(this means u need to get new mobo and ram as well.)

Cheapest option is to get an i7-2600/3770 2nd hand.

How much are you willing to spend?

Because if you are going to change to the current generation of CPUs, you will have to change to DDR4 RAM as well.

A used i7-3770 can be had for around $200 and i7-2600 is a bit cheaper.

Surprisingly these obsolete Core i7 chips aren't cheap still. I would rather buy brand new Coffee Lake Core i3 and motherboard since TS's existing mobo can fail anytime from aging...

Don't forget new RAM as well, and DDR4 is quite expensive at the moment.

I suggest a new setup since your setup is currently quite old

I know you do Photoshop (even though you refuse to GPGT) so yeah a Ryzen 5 will suffice, if you need more cores a R5 1600 would be nice

Iirc I saw a used 2600 floating around carousell a few days ago, TS might be keen if it is not snatched up already. Selling price was $120 I think

Those chips may be EOL but they still work for most users today.. and this reality is reflected in their second hand prices. After Sandy Bridge, each generation really only brought about tiny incremental improvements.

You are right about an old mobo though. That's a good reason to go current gen.

There's a used 3770 going for $190 right now, it'll come up as the first search result. (edit: carousell)
