I ever helped a friend replace a cmos battery on her laptop
It was so maddening - it's about the same as your case where one has to remove literally everything to get to one molex connected battery

but it's great fun to open up laptops. :s13:
Lenovo thinkpads are far the easiest to disassemble .. wait.. or maybe the HP Pro / Elitebooks

which thinkpads are you referring to? I have alot of bad experience to disassemble thinkpad books.

On the other hand, HP, DELL, Acer are one of the easiest.

T400 - a 2009 model if my memory serves me well.

Hello! :)

What os are you currently on?

Since you mentioned that you would be reformatting the HDD - I would assume that you would have already backed up all important files and the purpose of you "cloning" would be to bring just the OS over to the SSD.

If you have already upgraded to 10 on your HDD what you can do is to:

1. Ensure and check that your OS is already activated by pressing the "Windows Key" followed by typing "See if Windows is activated" .
2. Create an installation usb drive using the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool. Linked Here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
3. Swap out your HDD with the newly bought SSD
4. Fresh install Windows on the SSD.
5. During installation when asked for a CD key, click skip. All data should be stored in your UEFI already.

Windows 10 activation is hardware-based. As such it is be smart enough to recognize that no major components have changed and activate.

6. After installation, ensure that Windows 10 is activated by repeating step 1 again.

7. You can safely wipe your old HDD and put it in a portable USB enclosure.
8 All you have to do next is to reinstall laptop drivers from Windows update and your OEM's driver page.

Thanks for the detailed explanation. It is my sis laptop she is still using window 7. Not sure if she applied for the window 10 or not. She also seldom use the laptop that is why i suggested to swap to ssd to reduce boot up timing instead of buying a new laptop.

Hey! :)

Since it is seldom used, you can probably upgrade to W10 first then decide if you want to upgrade to a ssd.

Boot up and shut down speeds have improved a lot since W7 and even hdds nowadays can have less than a minute of boot up time.

If she did not opt for the W10 reservation, you can also follow the method listed here to upgrade instantly or reserve the os and wait alittle bit.

Cheers
