USB C to USB A converter -- will any functionality be lost?

Most of the USB mullti-port adaptors for laptops offered today are of Type C. I saw an adaptor with ports for HDMI and ethernet (RJ45 ) which is exactly what I am looking for. Currently, my laptop comes with 2 standard USB A ports which I have fully used -- for USB-HDMI (for 2nd external monitor); and USB-RJ45 (for ethernet). If I get the this USB C multi-port adaptor, can I just buy a USB C to USB A converter and use it to attach to my laptop, without losing the functionality in particular for HDMI and RJ45?

Afternote: I meant type A not type B. Amended.

you will lose those functions.

USB-A does not have enough pins to carry those signals.

Full function USB-C is 24 pins. USB-A is either 4 or 9 pins (USB 2.0 or 3.0).

Don't get those USB mullti-port adaptors for laptops

If you want to use it with your laptop, get a docking station instead
Eg : Dell D6000 Universal Docking Station', available at S$56 on #Carousell: https://carousell.com/p/1421595757

Not only you can expand your ports, it can also charge while you use your laptop.

IMHO.
Why don't get ?
1. value for money
2. compatibility
3. more features less trouble especially if want to use with company laptops

Disadvantages using USB mullti-port adaptors for laptops
  • Video Output: Many USB-C monitors or docking stations will not work through a passive USB-A adapter, as these require the specialized pin-mapping of a native USB-C port.
  • Maximum Charging Speed: USB-A ports typically cannot supply the high wattage required for laptops, meaning charging will be slower or non-existent.
  • High-Speed Data Transfers: If the adapter or the USB-A port is USB 2.0, you will be capped at 480 Mbps, regardless of how fast your USB-C device is.
  • Advanced Features: Protocols like Thunderbolt or specific Alternate Modes are not supported

Aiya, just get the type-c ones. Docking station also need to connect to type-c or special connector.

If I understand correctly, TS' laptop only has 2 USB-A ports and no USB-C ports, hence he is asking for advice on whether using a USB-A to USB-C adapter to connect a USB-C hub to his laptop will affect the functionality of the USB-C hub. A docking station will probably be irrelevant as most docking stations use USB-C to have sufficient transfer speeds to handle multiple connections.

In theory, the function will not be affected, but the transfer speeds will be bottlenecked by the USB-A which is capped at 10Gbps for USB 3.1. USB-C can reached speeds of up to 80Gbps, which is essential for high resolution or high refresh rate monitors.

Monitor may not work properly if you use a high resolution or high refresh rate monitor. Internet speed should be fine as the lan cable is also capped at 10Gbps.
