Hi guys,

Just encountered my first accident and need some advice. Below are the details:

Yesterday crashed into the side of a lady driver's blue Honda Shuttle who drove straight on despite her side red traffic light near Old Airport Road Food Centre 11am. Taxi driver behind her also alighted to check on our well being, told her she ran a red light. So I had no dashcam and was dumb not to take down the witness contact details. She has cam but obviously will not be sharing. She went off and informed me later the night she will be choosing to claim. I'm using a rental car.

I have some questions:

1. Rental company said will need to collect upfront $2k in 3rd party excess from me in case the lady claims against us and succeed since 50/50 with no evidence. If the case is closed where either no claims made against us or she is unsuccessful, can i get back this 3rd party excess payment?

2. If I make a traffic police report based on my injuries, will the authorities be involved and escalate to the degree on checking surrounding cameras?

3. Do I have the right to source and engage another car repair workshop to repair my rented car instead of letting the rental company (they are also car repair workshop business) do the works?

4. Regarding Q1, is there any way to check on the status of the claims against us to avoid being double chop by my rental company? (taking 3rd party excess damage $ but end up no 3rd party excess payment needed to be paid).

Appreciate your help. :(

2. No....gov will not use the cameras surrounding for civil traffic accident or such.

3. Depends on the rental company. Usually not as they will want to protect the quality of repairs done (external probably do the cheapest surface repair and leave whatever underneath aside).

1. if full claim is made on you, you won't get back the excess. if you win the claim, you will get the money back.

2. If you have injury and has seen a doctor, you have to make a police report in order to put the injury into the claim. However, cameras on govt infra are not used for personal claim, but for tracking of related criminal activities only.

3. You might need to check with your rental company, only they can advise.

4. As long as you have made a police report, the insurance company will engage a law firm for investigation. The law firm will update you on the status of the investigation/outcome. By any reason if you believe the rental company is abusing your excess or has the intention to cheat, you can also approach the law firm for help. Of course, the higher you shoot up for help, then more you gotta prepare to pay. As far as I know, as long as the claim is through an insurance channel and that an independent surveyor is engaged to evaluate the claim, there is no room for overcharging. Or else both the surveyor and repair shop will get into the net of law.

Normally rental car companies will fit their rental with dash cam. So weird that ur rental company did not do so.

TS. Call taxi company track down driver request for video footage if possible. Else try local road awareness facebook like roads sg, sg reckleas drivers, beh chia lor, etc. Put up appeal for them provide video evidence. If u lucky someone might already posted it. Good luck.

Probably the lady already know she gone case so said will claim. Let her insurer fight it out for lower amount.

1. Check your rental contract. What it says in the event of accident.

2. Have injuries? You have to make a police report. This is mandatory. Let them conduct the rest of the investigation.
Mine was kenna bang from the rear, side and plus with video evidence. Incident happens in an approaching merging lane.

Made a police report cos got injuries. After almost 3 months, received police letter saying they will take action on the other party for careless driving.

3&4, Refer to the rental contract.

Hopes after this incident, you are more informed on rental cars.

Rule number 1. Always have a dash cam ( at least front or a cheap one).
Rule number 2, refer to number 1.
