never check weather before doing such sports? or a lot of people think lightning strike is just a myth ... I often see people just walk leisurely in rain, light of heavy, with lightning flashing and thunders roaring ... they don't seem to think the lightning will ever hit them ...

When you're right by (or standing on) the salty waters, everywhere seem just as 'low resistance' path to take for the lightning.

But otherwise, that is the case. I saw before lightning striking the vehicle antenna right in front of me out in the field, wide open ground no trees around. Those whip antenna were the tallest objects out there.
