Hi all,

I am looking to buy a 17" gaming laptop with at least GTX970m. I am wondering if I should get the laptop now or wait for broadwell CPU. I see now pretty much all are still 4th gen cpu. Will the price be a lot more expensive?

Thanks alot =)

Broadwell's primary tangible improvement is in the integrated GPU, which for a gaming laptop wont really matter since you'll game on the discrete one. Supposedly battery life is also improved quite a bit compared to Haswell.

Otherwise, its mostly more of the usual intel 'tick tock' architecture change (die shrinks to a smaller size) so I dont expect to see CPU horsepower jump up by a lot (and indeed the recent intel track record is that their CPU performance hasnt really been improving that much as they're focusing on efficiency)

Actually for a gaming laptop, be it 3rd gen, 4th gen, or 5th gen i7 processor, honestly speaking if you are not those benchmark techie who likes to benchmark your speed etc, 4th or 5th gen really wont make any noticeable better gaming experience for the everyday gamer..

just get a reasonable gfx like the 970m onwards, preferby a ssd so that you can have better game loading times and everything will seem much snappier.. and of cuz at least 8gb ram.

dont really need 16gb ram as you wont utilise it anyway if you are just gaming and surfing net etc.

imo, you should get it if you really need it, cause you will never catch up with technology :D

who knows after broadwell, nvidia might upgrade their GPU... :s13:

I understand that we can never catch up with technology. Just wondering when they will have broadwell. Is it anytime very soon?

I wouldnt want to purchase Iphone 6 in August when I know iphone 6S will be released in September/October. :)

Honestly, I believe the improvement from Haswell to Broadwell is not gonna be ground breaking. The main improvement is probably in the integrated GPU and power consumption.

Skylake is probably a better bet, but you never know how long you need to wait given that Intel have not provided an official release date so far. If you need it, I think there is no point waiting. If you are not in a rush to get a laptop, then take your time. ;)

The news now is that Broadwell for Gaming will be out around July period, probably around few months before transiting to Skylake by the end of the year.

No point waiting for Broadwell as improvement are slight. Intel does not even care to allow proper transit to Broadwell, thus you can see how unimportant it is to intel. Skylake is said to have much more improvements in the overall architecture. :)
