Web host recommendation

I'm planning to setup a big website with potential more than 1-5k international viewers, contains many arge images (like photo gallery). I'm thinking each user may rack up to 100-200mb of images per month.

Any recommendation? I'm currently on www.singaporehost.sg for my own portfolio website, but I don't trust the word unlimited.

If you are looking at large amount of media, what you should be looking at is a CDN so that images traffic don't hit your origin server so often. If your images are not changing a lot, then you should consider having them cached in the CDN and your users browser longer.

It is not cost effective to serve everything from your origin server all the time.

unlimited bandwidth? there should be a fair policy on such unlimited plan.

Who is providing the cheapest CDN today?

Akamai is certainly out of the question, as it targets big enterprise customers.

Amazon CloudFront? Google? Azure? CloudFlare?

Choose a CDN with a global presence having servers in countries that you foresee your visitors to come from.

Sorry I'm still a newbie in web hosting, what is CDN about? A cloud web hosting server?

So I just point the link of my images to CDN server, only keep the basic html, css files on my origin host?

starter just use Cloudflare first then talk about migrating to a paid CDN service later. Website and backend not even up yet want to dream how popular it is going to be. I can tell you 90% fail because they are give up after a while.

CloudFlare is one such CDN anyone can try. Try out the free service and see if the paid plans which offer more enterprising and interesting features such as Railgun is of your interest.

If your services are hosted in any of the cloud provider, then you can opt them as one of the choices, but I don't recommend if your services are hosted elsewhere. These CDN services in the cloud provider normally integrate better for their other services.

To TS:

In order to make CDN advantages to you, you will need to have good understanding on Web Caching. Otherwise, you wouldn't reap the benefits of CDN effectively. Also you will need to understand the caveats of caching and how to work with and around it.

I also read about MaxCDN but I have not done much research on it and have not used it before. You can go take a look

Possible, since I saw many photos embedded in public forums from Facebook CDN.

However note that Facebook may resize and scale your images and photos down to certain sizes. For professional photographers wanting to showcase their work at full resolution quality, they may find this unacceptable.

depends on functionality... if just for the sake of showing photos as an amateur then yeah you can make use of FB but take note of image size scaling as mentioned. If your website is a professional one doing all the showcases, portfolios etc... then please host it on a CDN or at least on your very own web server.

For starter Cloudflare is free or Amazon S3 + Cloudfront which is dirt cheap. MaxCDN is really good but the pricing commitment will kill you first.
