what causes PSU to uplorry?

my 2 year old corsair TX650M failed the paperclip test, fan twitch a bit then won't move at all

made appointment with convergent already, but i'm wondering what causes PSU to fail? past months got few times my circuit breaker tripped when a lightning strikes nearby, could it be the cause?

Suspect input capacitor shorted. My Corsair HX620W also tripped the breaker on a fine Saturday morning, just 2 years into its 5 years warranty life.

Ya, sudden surge of current likely killed your PSU.
But that's a good thing actually. Cause your PSU is the first defense to other parts of your system.
You got inspect your mobo for dmg?

thankfully no damages

it's just that the non boot issue happens intermittently

some days can boot when press power button/short mobo PWR_ON pins, some days no response at all

if i manage to get it booted up, i must not shut down at all

Power transistor shorted when the main switch is on. PSU with faulty capacitor usually has no power.

My AX860 also failed. 1 year warranty left (out of 7 years).

Contacted corsair and they provided a label to send it back to them via DHL.

The replacement unit they offer either HX1000 or AX850 Titanium so it's kinda an upgrade, pretty happy awaiting my RMA.

Bad point is my custom sleeved cables has no use now =((

DHL near my workplace. Ubi so far away.

And my PSU is EOL so not sure what PSU I will get if RMA.

But email corsair they will tell me the proposed replacement and they pay for shipping anw ~

For my case, i presume its static buildup issue which i read on the net - need to remove static buildup by press n hold pwr button withthe cables detached from wall (ya it sounds weird). then plug the plug back into power socket then press/hold power button and hope it startup, else repeat earlier procedure. After a while, it wld boot up.

Is it possible its a psu issue too?

Not engineer here, but could it be grounding issues?

Mine is prob 2yrs into my 10yrs warranty only (thermaltake grand).

issue is if i take the psu to distro i will not have a pc to use liao

The pc b4 this (intel 4460), prob have this issue too but i throw away thinking its spoilt thus change to current 1700 rig.

Planning to upgrade, so maybe get another psu also.....

Usually is one of the voltage out of specification. As power supply is build in such a way that all voltage is to comply to required specification then power supply will send power good signal to motherboard.

This is why sometime you see pc power up but will not boot.

Usually, this kind of issue is one voltage missing or out specification. First thing to check is if any capacitor issue by visual. If cannot spot anything, and if power supply is those expensive type, try to change the capacitor in group. Eg, 5v first, then 12v, 3.3v etc.

Now a day, new power supply is not as lasting as those old one. For some reasons, capacitors seem to be one major detect.
