Im looking to buy a 1TB internal 3.5" hard disk, but im not sure which brand/model to get.

This hard disk is a secondary hard disk, used for storing games, music, videos and photos. Any recommendations, or will the cheapest one do?

Try to avoid Seagate and Toshiba with lackluster reliability record and only covered by 2 years warranty. Western Digital Blue 1TB @ $82 provides the best reliability while Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000.C 1TB @ $80 offers better speed. Both of which comes with 3 years warranty.

by reliability do you mean less likely to crash or fail in general, and by speed, how much faster?

Nope ever since water flooded their Thai factories 2 years back. Initially, they dropped to even worse of 1 year warranty but since last year when things got improved they reinstated another 1 more year of warranty.

to me IT stuff is heng or sway thing one ...

If comparing stuff like say an Asus GTX 680 and a MSI GTX680 both with no batch issues, then its valid.

But for HDD, the difference is quite huge for say a Seagate consumer drive and a WD Blue or Hitachi 7k3000. Even someone whom I know from seagate admits that their process for their consumer HDD is louya :s13::s22:

WD Black still 5 years warranty rite?

If we divide the price of the HDD by the number of years of warranty, this seems to provide lower $/GB for the WD Black.

I think Hitachi is a good brand. On a side note, I feel Toshiba's 3.5 inch drives should be decent too since they are using Hitachi's plants to manufacture.

Seagate is on my permanent black list though. :s13:

Yup five years. But up front the price is really a little hard to digest :s13:

Some Toshiba drives now are actually Hitachi-made ones with Toshiba sticker, but only with 2 year warranty instead of Hitachi's 3 years.
My personal preference Samsung / Hitachi / Seagate
My blacklist WDC
Sammy also bought over by Seagate alr, you RMA a sammy drive now likely to get back a Seagate counterpart lol
