I have a budget of about $1200 and a friend offered me these 2 setups:

Specs #1:

Intel i5-3470 Desktop Processor
AsRock B75 Pro3-M Motherboard
SilverStone Strider Essential Series 500W
Samsung DVD Writer Super WriteMaster 24X SATA (SH-224)
WD Caviar Blue 1TB SATA / 64MB Cache (WD10EZEX)
Coolermaster K350 Mid Tower (Black) or K380 Mid Tower case
Corsair Vengeance LP 8GB (2x4GB)DDR3 1600MHz CL9

$680 for the above specifications.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Specs #2:

Intel i7-3770K Desktop Processor
AsRock Z77-Pro3 Motherboard
Coolermaster M2 Silent Pro 620W
Samsung DVD Writer Super WriteMaster 24X SATA (SH-224)
Seagate 500GB 3.5" internal HDD 7200rpm
Coolermaster K350 Mid Tower (Black) or K380 Mid Tower case
Corsair Vengeance LP 8GB (2x4GB)DDR3 1600MHz CL9

$900 for this one.

If I got for #1, I feel that I would have money for other stuff like a GPU.
But, would I still be able to get a reasonable GPU if I get #2?
This rig is for gaming and I don't really know if I will be overclocking.
Any suggestions?

For gaming, i5 is enough. i7-3700k is overkill for you, assuming it is only for gaming with no intention on overclocking.

Rig 1 is a better option. Throw in a Powercolor 7970 OC at around $520, you can play most games at high settings smoothly with decent fps.

like i mentioned earlier today

3470 + Asrock B75 pro 3 = 325
1 x kingston 8gb DDR3 Ram = 77
1 x hitachi 1tb hdd = 80
Samsung DVD Rom = 21
sharkoon t28 = 86 (you can change its up to you)
powercolor 7950 = 385
FSP plat 550w = 125
Win 7 hp 64 bit OEM = 115

total 1217
Tradepac

CASH IS KING, will get you some discount

if cost is too high u can always drop to fsp raider 550w which is 78 but non modular

if you dun need OS u can easily put a SSD in

for setup 1 since no oc just get value rams will do, 1 x 8gb prices are 77 the most 80

it boils down to whether you are going to OC your PC or not, what usage you are using it for.

just choose FSP psus you wont go wrong

ODD: Samsung DVD RW @ $22
HDD: Hitachi Deskstar 1TB @ ~$80
GPU: Powercolor 7970 V3 @ $496

PSU: FSP Platinum 550W @ $125

Total: $1182
Buy and build at Tradepac.
