External power bricks follow the Efficiency Level system, which is enforced by EU and USA. It's 80Plus that nobody gives a shot about.

For my case I am trying to make my build small. If I go with a powerboard with laptop style AC-DC 19V adapter I can achieve a compact build. With ATX I cannot have a small build.
However many people look down on these powerboards as inferior compared to full sized ATX.
So I just want to know why. If there is a technical reason I will choose a larger casing to fit ATX size. But if technically there is no problem (e.g - mobo can regulate inferior supply) I might as well choose powerboard.
PSU is not rocket science, I don't buy whatever plus sh!t. I buy what I need and know what's inside, please don't bother to explain why I need 80plus or 90plus PSUs.
This is the power brick in use since 2011 for this HP computer I'm using to reply here, my admin computer as well as the default computer to run my laser cut machine using Coreldraw and LaserCad almost daily.

The innards look scary, doesn't it? Well, its been running flawlessly for the past 15 years since P4 era and finally breakdown last week, after replaced 1 x 100uf 16v and 470uf 16v capacitor, it works again. Now I'm using it as a bench PSU for testing stepper motor, BLDC, sensors and various electronic modules including touch screen and peristaltic pumps etc....
What's so scary about the PSU?
This one made me skip a heartbeat when i powered on. Had a fire extinguisher ready by my side somemore.
