Google and u will know Norton anti virus no good(Really an understatement here). Recommend you to use kaspersky/ bitdefender. These 2 got really high ratings for anti virus software.

ALL Standalone Antivirus are not up to task these days. You need either an Endpoint security suite (corporate) or Internet Security suite (personal).

I wouldn't recommend Norton Anti-virus also. You need Norton Internet Security because the Firewall uses Reputation-based ranking, it has IDS, it protects against attacks that target network vulnerability in Windows, Adobe & Java software before they're patched.

I googled Norton & the reputable reviews put Norton as Top 3. I've also contacted Norton support a few times due to licensing issues & always had good experience. My systems have not been compromised (touch wood) for more than 6 years also ever since NIS 2005. After 2008 or 2009, NIS is also very light on system resources unlike previous versions.

I've just upgraded to NIS 2014 for free. As long as I pay $90 every year for 3 PCs, I can always upgrade to latest version.

If you can't afford a paid license, just use MSE and Avast together, but that'll slow down the system a bit.

If you're connected to the Internet with an always-on broadband connection, your PC is being scanned by botnets many times every hour of the day.

If your PC is not updated with the latest patch from Microsoft, your PC can be infected with virus within 3 hours. You don't even need to open a browser anymore to be infected.

If you're on a corporate LAN that doesn't have a good edge defense & end-point security, it can be infected the minute it's hooked onto the LAN.

Yes, MS Defender is ok against viruses from thumbdrive & email attachment but it's woefully inadequate against all the possible attack vectors from malwares.

The worst thing that can happen is a stealthy virus that install a rootkit & keylogger or a backdoor that monitor all your activities including your passwords, NRIC, bank account, phone numbers, etc. & send all your private info to a criminal syndicate.

Win 8 is pretty secure but all the hacker need is one vulnerability to be able to control your PC.

Norton is the lightest AV solution.
