Winter Clothing Advice

Hi all, I would like to check why I can purchase winter gear locally, and if there are different grades depending on how harsh the weather conditions are.

Personally, I've NEVER had any experience with extreme cold, so I don't exactly know how to do my shopping.

What items do I need? Are gloves and headgear necessary? What type of socks and footwear are suitable? Also, where can I find affordable stuff? Any good brands to look out for?

Hoping for some guidance to get me started, I'm looking at winter in Hokkaido for a trip next year. Thanks!

If any of you are plus size and need to buy plus size winter wear, I highly recommend: https://www.pluspreorder.com/collections/plus-size-winter-wear-singapore. I got one coat from them in 2018 and till now every time I go to winter countries I use the same coat. The quality is super good and lasts for every of my winter trips - even sub zero temperature during my trip to Harbin! Choose the down costs if you need a coat for sub zero temperature.

I also got their thermal leggings and thermal top. Very warm and comfy. I think 2 or 3 sets is good for winter.

When I went to Mongolia and Siberia in -25 degree C, I followed this guy's tips.

Uniqlo heattech is not for everyone. I wore before, froze like hell. Yet to try their extra warm versions in icy weather yet. If you are interested, try this US brand called wool and prince for wool inner clothing, better than icebreaker merino.

The key thing is layering.

When I was in Mongolia in 2016, temperature was sub-zero at -25.
Layering was sufficient to maintain my upper body temperature.
Your mileage may vary.

Upper body,
1st layer - Uniqlo heattech (old 2012 design, supposedly older tech?)
2nd layer - normal cotton T-shirt, pasar malam type.
3rd layer - Cashmere wool sweater (random China brand that my dad bought in the 90s)
4th layer - Uniqlo ultra light down jacket (2016 design)

Lower body
- just a pair of Jeans. I did not wear thermal underwear / heattech for lower body, because I can tahan the cold and I don't like feel of thermal underwear.

For gloves, you want to get those that can use on touchscreen, so that you don't have to remove your gloves to take picture on your smartphone.

Also, something that not many people touch on.

In single-digit/sub-zero winter, your smartphone may suddenly shut off because the battery is too cold.
Keep your smartphone near your body to keep it warm. Take out only when u need to take pictures.

When taking pictures, hold your phone with as much contact with your palm as possible.

Also, when the wind is very strong, it may cause wind chill effect and cause your phone to shutdown.

If your phone does shutdown, rub your phone to warm it up again.
