Hi All,

Is it worth salvaging the laptop cpu, RAM and HDD at a cost $400 (mini ITX & casing) ? I could use it as a spare desktop or HTPC.

BTW, I am looking at a Jetway mini ITX socket G motherboard. Those who have used it please help comment.

Thanks in advance.

You can use laptop CPU nor motherboard in desktop casing.

The best you can do is disassemble everything and leave the motherboard in the chassis/keyboard

Your laptop cpu is solder to the mobo one or not ?

You can reuse the rams if u can find a mobo that haf sodimm slots instead of normal dimm slots...

U can oso reuse the 2.5 inch hdd in your laptop if u want to...

I am looking at Jetway NF9G-QM77. Confirm my current faulty laptop is using i7 socket g m processor. This motherboard should be able to reuse the cpu, ram and hdd. But is it worth shelling out $400 just to salvage these 3 items ?

IMHO, I tink it is not worth it...

But if u got the money den why not ?? Can do it as a mini project, u can start a thread here or do a YouTube video or write a blog to tell everyone about your experience n wat u learnt n whether it is a viable as a mini itx PC for day to day tasks or not...

I diy my own NAS, hackintosh PC, bought a HP Microserver Gen8 and completely rebuild it, now trying to install Promox VE on a old PC n play with it, ppl tell me not worth it n waste of time but I find my sense of achievement from doing all these mini projects...

Your first sentence confirm my hesitation.. :o

Years ago I set up P4 mATX HTPC with ShowShifter and x10 remote. It worked fine for 3 months before the scheduled recording crapped out. Compliant to the developer and they gave me a patch that worked for a few months. In the end, the developer crapped out. :( A LG TV recorder solves all these nonsense.

No a pro. So cannot share on Youtube. :o

Mindless quest of salvaging the 3 laptop parts may not be wise financially.

Will hunt around ebay for mini ITX socket G mobo and see if luck is on my side. :)

At most, you may salvage RAM (Laptop SODIMM) and 2.5" HDD for use in an Intel NUC other NUC-like barebones PCs.

After Ivybridge, all laptop CPUs are soldered.

I used to think it will be nice to salvage parts from a failing laptop. However after considering the hassle and cost, I was put off from pursuing the idea. It was the motherboard that failed and it was very costly to replace.
