I think I made the right choice switching to VQ.

Thanks guys/gals for the reassurance. :)

on VQ for 2 yrs. this is the first downtime experienced as highlighted. this is because for some reasons they actually implement the optimization during the holy evening peak hours.
thus we all 'noticed' it.
otherwise, i do not sort of recall any major downtime during un-announced maintenance.
so this incident is still ok to me.

I believe there are quite many of us here who have been with ViewQwest for a long time (>2 years) and probably even some of us who are on non-contract plans. Such outage is definitely rare and the MTTR is usually fast, esp. given that we are somewhat kept informed of the issue and progress status (most transparent of all Fiber RSPs I have seen).

I am on non-contract so if ViewQwest's service has not been able to meet my expectations, I would have long dumped them. And those long time forumers here who knows me, knows I am quite a demanding chap. Not sure if this is of any consolation for you. :p

At least they listen to feedback and have implemented some suggestions. Unlike some RSPs who politely & indirectly tell u to sod off.

VQ is excellent in keeping us end users updated with status. 10/10.

However, it seems that they're not learning from past experience.

Last time a similar incident happened was on 1 Sep 2013 peak hour, slightly more than half a year ago, when they upgraded the backup link and the redundancy protocols failed.

See official response: http://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/79166248-post1728.html

Definitely room for improvement in change management. Current best practice recommends no minor or major changes during peak hours except for emergency changes to resolve P1 incidents...

If I count the number of outages I kena the last 6 months, one hand also not enough fingers to finish counting...

Sure, it's fast (i was from SH cable), but fast is no use if it's not stable.

Any recommendation for good router for BT?

If you're connecting via wired (and for BT you really should be... ;) ) the zhone can handle itself very nicely.

For Wi-Fi the best we've tested so far is the Asus RT-AC68U. The Apple Airport Extreme dishes out some decent speeds as well if you're more Mac inclined. :)

I was on a flight back from Shanghai on Monday evening so I didn't actually notice any downtime. My internet seemed fine when I got home at ~11pm and my flatmate was online and never mentioned anything.

Still impressive to see such a comprehensive RFO from a residential ISP -- we have enough trouble getting them from our corporate MPLS provider...

Do not recall being affected by any outage but yes, I would think that only emergency action should be done right there and then even if its during peak period. Anything else should be done during off peak periods.

We can. ITV and BBC is broadcasting the World Cup (for free), and we can access it using Freedom VPN.

Schedule: ITV and BBC announce 2014 FIFA World Cup match split | presscentre

Suggest you test your streaming connection first. Try watching something for an hour and see if you like the performance. Mine was jittery and failed to load on occasion.

Spent half a month last year troubleshooting it with VQ engineers. Spent another half a month this year to troubleshoot again.

Fingers crossed, I hope VQ has provisioned enough capacity for the World Cup.

I am confident to say, the first ever for residential broadband here in Singapore over the last decade or longer (since ST Magix PremiumSurf or even before like ISDN but that is not considered broadband yet).

ViewQwest has again set a high benchmark for other market players to catch up. :D

Hehehehehe... I love the way VQ is forcing big players to change.

Sure, it's fast (i was from SH cable), but fast is no use if it's not stable.

Time to look at ITIL foundation training for some of the key engineers in VQ and enforcement of proper change management. Operationally, there is plenty of room to improve on.

I would like to suggest VQ to look at setting aside some budget to re-invest in its operations (meaning system, process, documentation and people) in Y2015 too. Re-investing in infrastructure is important, but as the customer pool grows and impact of an outage becomes more critical/larger impact base (aka magnitude), it is also good management to re-invest in its operational needs and people.

Just my sincere opinion.

Hi everyone,

You should have all received a statement from our CEO in your e-mail concerning yesterday's outage - here it is again though just in case it got caught in some spam filters ;)

I have not received the e-mail, and it is not in my spam filters either. NOC and the fibernet forums does have my correct email though, so how to get this corrected?

What is RFO?
