Hello fellow HWZians,

I graduated from Temasek Polytechnic in 2008 with a Diploma in Internet & Multimedia Development, low GPA of 2+ (not fantastic at all, I know). After which I went on to the work force of teaching, becoming a dive crew to an executive in a local NGO now. After spending 5 years working in a NGO dealing with youth and overseas community development, I think it's time to further my studies and get at least a degree for now.

The master plan was while I study in university, my twin sister would work as a nurse to ease off some financial constraint. I've applied to Australians universities, but looks like I have to change plan to Canada because my sister won't be able to work in Australia since she's only a diploma nurse.

My sister is eligible to migrate to Canada, so she is going to try apply working in Canada.

I would like to hear from those who have studied/studying/going to study in Canada or know of people who did...

1. Is it easy to study in Canada? I note some universities have really high standards

2. Is it difficult to get into a Canadian university? Unlike Australia and UK where agents allow you to apply to multiple universities without paying for application fee first, I will have to pay to apply to each universities.

3. Any recommendation for International Development Studies undergrad programme? I did my research, but would love to hear first hand from those who have been there done that.

Thank you all in advance!

Thank you all in advance!

1. Easy is relative!
2. U have 2 qns here right? paying fees != difficult entry. U pay the agency one way or another. after working for few year U believe there is free lunch?
if U apply to Ontario Unis U can go thru http://www.ouac.on.ca much like UCAS. otherwise U have to apply to pay to apply to each Uni. Some Uni coming to SG for Canadian Edu Fair have waive application fees in the past. U can always choose to attend and apply during the fair if so.

As for difficult to get admitted, with low GPA that is hard. Uni like Newfoundland has lower admission req. yuyuthecat goes to MUN, can can try to reach out to her. UNB also not high, really depends on Uni.

3: very hard for U to get info from the horse mouth here. U'll be better off reaching out on International forum asking Canadians.

but regarding pt 2. Uni U can try will be
http://www.dal.ca/faculty/arts/ids.html
http://www.trentu.ca/ids/
http://www.yorku.ca/laps/sosc/idst/
http://www.unb.ca/fredericton/arts/idp/ids/
https://admissions.carleton.ca/programs/global-international-studies/
http://socialsciences.uottawa.ca/dvm (this may be a stretch for U)

otherwise U can always go community college for 2yrs and transfer to a better Uni to finish your final 2yrs provided you can make the grades needed. I gather U want to study in the same city where your sis is working. but the process may not be fast unless she has a job offer.. it would be faster.

------------
Note: Canadian Uni not real generous with transfer credits and you may have to spend 4yrs there. When you sister works there as nurse LPN/RPN (http://www.ccpnr.ca/become-an-lpnrpn/) needs to register too that takes time as well

Hi patryn33,

Thank you for replying me on Brightsparks and here, really appreciate your input.

Yes, manage to find some Canadian universities fair online, but that happened earlier this year. Will probably look out for it again next year!

I've managed to find 11 universities (not sure if that's all) that offers the course I'm interested in, but will have to size down a few because some of it are in Quebec. Quebec requires my sister to be proficient in French in order to work as a nurse... so I guess, I have to choose another!

My sister is waiting for me to finalize my university before she's able to apply to NNSA and provincial nursing board for her registration.

I know that I'll probably not qualify for credit transfer, and I'm alright with that actually :)

You'd mentioned on Brightsparks that "no SAT requirement but you need TOEFL. You can do without if you go CC." - What's CC by the way?

CC - community college

Generally cheaper than uni, u need to check transfer info
If limited funds u have to narrow down uni
Keep a file with the uni you found and fees, weed out those in Quebec and those u wouldn't get admitted and those cost a bomb if u cannot afford

Canada uni fair today don't attract a lot of uni participating
Should look into this yr participating uni and email them if they waive application fees should use apply there. If so u can bring all the req docs and hand it over then.
