Nice looking small folder.
Very gentlemanly. The styling is a bit like CRK Mnandi

interesting - I think you will like the artistic william henry knives. try hunting for one. I know I just missed a very beautiful one recently, what with empty pockets.

What was that chef knife made of?
8670 low alloy tool steel. old steel developed in the 1940s. low chromium so it's a rust magnet.

what isn't visible is:

- how thin the edge is ground - a chef knife isn't a hunting / field knife. I like mine ground under 0.010" just behind the edge.
- how thick the blade stock is - I like mine 1/16". That one looks a bit thicker, maybe 1/8".

but whatever the case, that's impressive.

 any price? No limit or Budget? Any specific models? If you want a handmade custom flipper (from a maker with a 7 year wait list) at usd2200 or a hard to find ZT with delicious m390 steel (before they switched the steel out) at usd300, pm me. Of course there's also my fixed blade Dozier available for usd315 :)

Finally manage to find Hnderer XM-18 3" slicer, Gen3 in the exchange.
The knife feels good in the hand as I do find my ZT 0562CF kinda large for EDC duty.

Now the bad part is, I'm feeling a bit underwhelmed wih the knife.
I'm a "flipperholic", if there's such a word for it :s13:
The latest Gen3 3" has stronger detent than the earlier 2 gens, but the blade just doesn't fly out like my 2 ZTs.
But I think I should be contended that no wrist action is needed to flip open the Hinderer.
My second peeved is that the pivot screw will come loosen after a few flipping, so I need to go out and search for loctite.
Thirdly, even though it is a slicer grind, the blade is still quite thick and it doesn't do very well in peeling some mangos skins :D

All the hinderers are not slicing machines. They have thick blades and are also thick at the edge. In the production models (like yours, I believe), the edge is even thicker as it is flat ground. They will not slice mangoes or food well.

Also, hinderers are not flipping machines. Rick does not want to put bearings or tune his detent such that it will flip like ZTs or like Bogies/Fraleys (non bearings). His philosophy is that he wants the knives to be able to be disassembled 'in the field' easily - and with bearings you can't. That may have been the case in the non-caged bearing days, but today...I'm not sure.

Hinderers were the best buy about 10 years ago as they were head and shoulders above the competition in the field of 1+1 folders (one ti slab mated with one G10/CF slab). Their only competition was the Strider SNG/SMF and the fit and finish/tolerances of STriders was way below that of HInderer's.

Fast forward 10 years later, things are different. You have Reates, Rikes, ZTs etc. The Hinderers are robust folders but if you want it to perform the best it can, I would recommend:

- install cage bearings. There are many who can mill the pocket and do that for you. The pimper should also tweak the detent for you.
- send it out for a regrind. I know of one that can turn around quickly.

After that, you'll be super happy.

Thanks for your insight bro.
I kinda expected those things when I communicated with the seller on the XM-18, so I just accepted the "limitations" of the knife.
Luckily I bought the knife slightly below market value, so if I decided to cash-in later, I won't really feel heart pain :D

I think my ZT's flipping actions already spoiled me.
Pity coz the 3" XM-18 feels just nice in the hand, unlike my 0562CF which feels a bit thin on the handle, or the ZT 0900 which is a bit short for a 4-finger grip.
The jimping on the XM-18 handle is also very aggressive, that a few flips later I thought I need to visit a manicure to touch-up on my index finger's nail :s13:

For Loctite you can get it here: http://www.passiongadgets.com/treadlocker-loctite-243-50ml.html

That's a nice colour combo for the XM-18 you got there btw. I personally would prefer the wharncliffe blade.

Thanks for the link bro.
I've seen few brand new 3" wharnie online from the dealers at normal price, but the slicer grind can only get in the second hand market.

The blue titanium hardware was installed by the original owner, with the exception of the handle nuts, which are still stock.
Right now I'll try to stay away from Steel Flame :D
