Hey guys,

i looking to tailor a set of suit for my ROM. (including pants).
shirt is optional.

My budget for the suit is around 350-500. i've read through some pages and the 1st post on recommended shop for budget/mid range/high range. Thing is, i have no idea on the types of fabric / acronyms all the bros here are talking about, kinda lost. *my fren told me to try dylan and son but its seems a tad too ex

Was wondering if someone could recommend a couple of shop or a particular tailor within my budget. It will awesome if the shop is newbie friendly for a 1st timer like me.

Im not very fussy on the fabrics. i own some shirts/suit from benjamin barker / massimo dutti and im looking at fabric in that range. I would also love my suit to have a 'modern' fitting feel to it rather than the more 'classical' style. (cant find a better way to describe it).

goona use it for ROM / future events.

cheers.

Yes you are right. I got a fabric from Lusso's in-house made-in-japan fabric range before at $90 a shirt. However it was marketed as a launch promotional pricing at that time. Not sure if it applies now.

By any means, if his in-house range is still the same as the one I got I wouldn't reccomend it to beginners by any means.

The fabric is thick, tough and has an extremely dry hand feel. Not a tropical fabric and not one for someone who is unfamiliar with tailoring/fabrics.

At the sub $100 range Lusso is as good as it gets though. I can think of any other shirtmaker that charges below that and are worth visiting... You would be better served buying OTR IMO. Banana Republic, Zara, Massimo Dutti or Uniqlo are pretty good.

I happen to be wearing a shirt made from the same fabric this morning. The fabric was heavy and i felt like i was wearing a cardboard at the beginning. However it did softened quite nicely after a few washes and I really like the feel of it now.

Looks pretty good. If the fabric is really that stiff then it certainly helped with your shoulder issue.

Dylan is way over your budget. For your budget, you can only go to those in the budget range in the list. Don't concern yourself with the fabrics, just choose what you like based on the available fabrics at your budget range.

Bring Pics to show the tailor what you want the suit to look like.

I think the likes of Sze Sze and Este Bartin should be good enough for you at this price range.
Tried both of them before and some of the other forummers review on them are also pretty decent

Perhaps i should have used 'higher' waisted? From the picture it does look like I'm wearing them on my hips though, but I wear them on my belly button.

Ahhh, you have a longish torso then. It does look more mid-rise than high-rise.

Isn't wearing pants on your belly button the best? I can't bring myself to wear anything else these days. Just supremely comfortable.

I can't wait for my high waisted dad jeans to be ready...

Hello, I've been a long time stalker of this thread and basically I would like some advice on where to go for shirt tailoring. I have my standard tailor that I go to at Peninsula Plaza but I would like someone with better fabric offering and ideally, skills as well.

I've decided to move completely to quality and my budget is topping out at $400 a shirt for something high quality and well made. I would prefer it to be at the 200-250 range though.

I'm look for the following things:

- A proper split yoke (for sloping shoulders of different degree)
- A decent selection of contrast fabrics.
- High quality fabrics that can hold an iron well. I'm not too concerned about brand of farbic. Some of the best shirts I have aren't branded (I'm actually rather disappointed with the 3 soktas shirts that I have)
- A shirt that is cut properly and fits/drapes properly across the silhouette.

Quite a lot of the tailors I've met always raise the issue of bringing my best fitted shirt but for me I feel that if you're a skilled tailor, you will measure and cut the fabrics differently, why do you want to work off a different tailor's measurement and cut?

Will appreciate anyone who can point me in the right direction.

As fit is very personal you should ALWAYS bring your best fitted shirt to close the gap in communication. Sure you can challenge your tailor to do some guesswork to challenge his skill.. But.. Why would you do that?

It is important to note that bringing your best fitting shirt is not a matter of "copying" the shirt and cutting corners by the tailor. It just makes it easier for them to understand what is your idea of a good fit so that they adjust their house cuts accordingly.

No matter how skilled tailors are they cant read your mind. "Fit" is very subjective. So don't waste your money and both yours and your tailor's time with shennigans that will make everyone's lives more difficult than it has to be.

Everything else you mentioned you should discuss with your tailor. Soktas is a decent fabric but there are factors such as weave and weight which might play into how much they fit your expectation.

At your $200/shirt price point you can visit Dylan & Sons who are held in high regard here or even Kay Jen. Both of them are skilled and experienced enough to be able to provide you with a proper consult.

Thanks for pointing that out arc, will look to compensate for my shoulders issue during my next commission.

Absolutely, I've also come to appreciate the comfort of a more generous cut for a roomier feel especially in the thigh area. Don't think I'll ever go back to the low-mid rise + slim fit cut.

Do share some pics of those jeans if possible!

.

Probably can try SoA, should be enough to cover the initial pattern cost

Is it true that all tailor shops will not divulge the measurements to the customer?
