I would like to share my experience at the Authorised Apple Repair Centre at Plaza Singapura.

My iPhone 6s started behaving strangely, with flickering screen and faulty off button on Monday. It is only 4 months old. I booked an appointment and went down to Plaza Sing. However, I had still had to wait 20 minutes even though I had an appointment and arrived on time.

After taking the phone in for diagnostics, I was told the phone was perfectly fine by the service staff called Esmund. So I asked why I could not turn off the phone then... After that, the service staff tried to turn off the phone, and concluded that it was faulty.. which was clearly stated in my list of reported faults. [Some competence issue here I think...] He told me to come back in 10 minutes to collect a new phone. I came back after 10 minutes, and was to to come back later...[Note the amount of waiting I had to endure...] After more waiting, I was told that there was water damage in my phone and refused to honour their warranty.

I disputed their assessment as I did not submerge my phone in water, nor did I abuse it in any way. It has always been protected with a good cover and tempered glass screen protector from day 1. So, I was directed to call the AppleCare line... which I did.

The AppleCare person called Elijah asked Esmund to check if the liquid damage indicator in the phone was triggered... After checking, Esmund said it was not, but the corrosion in the phone was consistent with liquid damage. I think the phone was probably damaged by condensation, which is why the liquid damage indicator was not triggered.... but the service centre was trying to deny service so that they can save cost.

Elijah told Esmund to send him pictures of the phone and told me that he will contact me within the same day on their assessment... which he did not.

This evening, I contacted Apple via chat and asked them to provide photos of the damage, which they refused even though they have it (since Esmund sent it to them). They asked me to get it from Esmund myself.

I have spent so much time trying to solve this issue with no outcome, and constantly being asked to jump through hoops. I believe Apple has something to hide. The phone must be designed poorly such that it can be damaged via liquid even though it was not submerged or splashed with water. It must be condensation from my constant movement in and out of aircon. However, they refused to hand over the pictures so that the truth will never get out... and they can continue to refuse warranty service.

When I went back to the office and told my story, my boss laughed and said the exact same thing happened to him. However, he signed up with the AppleCare+ plan and they took care of his phone.

There must be many such cases of liquid damage in humid Singapore, and Apple will continue to deny warranty service.

Be warned.... I have been a loyal iPhone user for years... but my next phone will be a Samsung.

Just taking this case as a example, if we have applecare+, will our warranty be voided?

Humidity will definitely not damage the phone since it is designed to sustain humidity. You should call Apple directly and not through chat. I have similar case and Apple talk to the service centre manager and waive off replacement charge (i don't know if it is probably due to the fact I was a loyal Apple customer :o).

But if we do not purchase applecare, will Apple take our case? Wouldn't they refer us to the local Apple service center?

I think if you don't have apple care, then repair will definitely not be free. its a case by case basis as determined by the extent of severity bah...

Of cos apple will still take your case. You will have to explain what exactly happened and they will override any decision (if any) made by authorized apple service centre.

Not so for my phone. I did not submerge it in water, no splash, etc... but there was liquid at the entry points. Mind you... there was not enough water to trigger the liquid indicator, but they took internal corrosion as 'proof' that there was liquid damage. Once they have that 'evidence' they invoke their right not to service the phone.

So... apple warranty is very weak. In humid Singapore, I suspect that they will be able to find some liquid damage over time. Like I said, it happened to my boss too. Maybe we should all keep our phones in dry cabinets at night? Ridiculous.

Remember that they did not even bother to ensure that the iPhone 6 won't bend in your pocket? I believe humidity is way too much to consider.

Reminds me of a case where an insurance company refused to payout a life insurance claim because the insured did not think it was important enough to declare that she had a history of asthma. The fact that she passed away because of cervical cancer did not matter as the insurance contract says that any material non-disclosure would void the claim.

I have been a loyal iPhone user for years... but if they do not give me a satisfactory solution, this will be my last iPhone.

I talked to them already.... talk and talk and talk... for hours... still no solution. Just words to pacify me... say they will definitely look at my case, find a solution, etc... but my phone is still waiting in the AASP. Maybe at night they will spit it at to create more liquid damage?

I do not abuse my phone and this bad thing happened. Basically, the phone design is crap... not suitable for use in humid Singapore.

If you really must use an iPhone, then you have to give in to their unethical ploy to get you to buy their AppleCare+. This subjective liquid damage nonsense was not an issue before they started trying to fleece us with AppleCare+.

If you are busy and have no time to deal with their nonsense, then I would suggest that you buy the AppleCare+ before you head down to the service center. I would suggest this, even though I have been unjustly treated because they are such a huge market share, they don't really about customer satisfaction these days. Treat it as 'protection money'?

It is only worth if you are sometimes not careful with your device or travel overseas frequently with an Apple Store in the country you're at.

1. Water spills, screen damage can up to 2 times with a 'cheaper' service fee.

2. If let's say you're in country, say US, and the device model isn't the same one as the one you have, they will ship one to the local Apple Store. More info and confirmation is needed on that.

That is true if you live in a cool dry climate. From my experience, liquid damage occurred even though I am extremely careful with my phone. I put it down to either humidity or normal perspiration... both of which a normal user would experience.

By interpreting 'liquid damage' so strictly, they can just about deny warranty for most phones in hot/humid Singapore with time. I would guess that the warranty would really be valid for about 3 months or less in most cases? My phone is about 4 months+ old, and there were signs of liquid damage with no abuse on my part.

So, Apple warranty is good for about 3 months, and the only way to get the proper warranty beyond that is to buy AppleCare+... which is exactly what they want us to do.

I thought I did not need AppleCare+ because I am a careful user. Now I feel completely cheated.

Think I will recommend u Sony Xperia Z5 or Z5 Premium for your next phone. The interface is near stock Android and most importantly, people do feedback that it's hot at the back of the phone. If the phone can get hot, then I doubt it will have corrosion inside. Plus, it a ip68 phone. :D

If I were you I would email Tim Cook directly. Not that he'll read it, but someone will.

I had an issue with iTunes changing their TnCs in Singapore (age limits for full accounts). Couldn't add my daughter's account to the family share and spent weeks with Apple debugging until I found the cause.

While the email to Tim didn't reverse the decision, I got a $200 gift card from them.

Personally feel that it's better to go through apple instead of the local authorized service center.

Case 1:
Had a IP5 that qualified for the sleep/wake button replacement program, staff simply brushed me off stating the phone is out of warranty. In actual fact the program states that "The program covers iPhone 5 models for 3 years after the first retail sale of the unit.", mine was 2.6 years at that point of time.

Case 2:
Current IP6S had a home button issue, service center verified the problem and could only offer me a 16GB IP6 as loan unit. I was told 1 to 1 exchange is only offered to cases where repair is not possible, and hence my unit will be sent in for repair. (?)

My unit was a 64GB, I was not able to restore my backup onto my loan unit and had to wait an additional 20 minutes for them to prepare the loan unit.

Upon collecting my repaired unit, I noted that the whole front panel has been replaced, the screen along with the home button. A pleasant surprise, enough for me to overlook the fact that scuffs have been made along the rim of the phone. These scuffs are probably caused when they were trying to pry off the old screen. Didn't expect this kind of repair standard from an authorized service center but I don't see myself getting anywhere even if I made a fuss out of it. Costed me another 20 minutes to return my loan set afterwards.

Hopefully the service standards improve if Apple Store were to come to SG, else I don't see the benefits of staying with Apple anymore when the customer service is sh!t and I can easier save some dough getting myself some other flagship Android device.

A word of advice for those requiring servicing for their device, I feel that it's better to go through Apple CSO themselves through phone call or online chat and convince them to use AppleCare Express to handle your case even if you have to pay the ~$50 excess. Beats having to waste your time at the authorized service center.

Don't go to local apple service unless the real Apple Store and genius is there to help

I also went to them before and got Crap reply and in end apple help me and say no such thing so the local seevice just crap

Take it from me I used to be a samsung user too
And u look at HWZ s7 post full of issue evdn come back repair still even worse

And they don't have a real apple to help they can only go to local SamsunG. Repair if got issue

At least iphone can go to apple directly without going to the local crap service

Anybody had experience with doing a 1 to 1 exchange with Apple? The CSO @ Apple told me they can do a 1 to 1 exchange for me. They will send me a brand new iPhone 1st, But they need to charge a full amt of a brand new iphone on my credit card 1st till they receive my faulty iPhone within 10days den they will credit back the amt to me.
Want to find out more like how to send back the faulty unit to Apple. Is the the procedure of sending it back to the troublesome. Did try to ask the CSO, but he did not ans my question.

You have AppleCare+?

From what I read so far you have to pass your faulty device to the DHL guy who delivered the new iPhone, he will then send it back to Apple.

As a person who used to own both Apple and Samsung products, the reason why I switched to Apple full time was how much Samsung's CS pissed me off.

Hope the retail store opens soon with a proper Genius Bar. Let these authorised resellers and service Centres collapse.
