The title is misleading. Its not just Intel slowing down, the ENTIRE semiconductor industry is slowing down due cos of this... :s22:

I don't see complaints about TSMC or Samsung slowing down with introducing new chips, only Intel...

However, the article is talking about the semiconductor industry as a whole

Cause current lithography methods are hitting limits and the new EUV technology has a set of problems that would make it extremely costly. Yield for semiconductors are already very low, any lower and it would be hard to stay profitable.

sorry to bring this up but:

IBM ftw! There are real scientists and inventors in there, not manufacturers who just shrink die size.

If you are even reading...

Of course, IBM’s five-qubit quantum computer is still a long way from beating today’s supercomputers. But if it can improve at a similar pace to Moore’s Law, quantum computers could have thousands of qubits within the next 20 years.

And they are also doing this...

Yes, in IBM you trust.

In IBM I trust, to bring us to the next frontier of chip fab tech.

IBM's five qubit system?

Did you read any other sites about IBM's five qubit system or just HWZ alone?

Any idea how big is the IBM's five qubit system processor currently?

This big and are we any where close to being able to mount it on processor socket or direct solder onto the motherboard without putting the entire system into a sub zero freezer and encase it into another casing to prevent electromagnetic radiation?

Is IBM doing a fantastic job by not shrinking the die size?

I've heard EUV being bandied around as early as the early 2000s. Intel stated they have a roadmap down to 5-7nm several years ago, so they are pretty confident they have the tools to get there, just slower, perhaps 3-4+ years per node instead of the 2-3 currently.

Ever since the iPhone ushered in the mobile computing era, the fabs has been going full-throttle trying to satisfy demand. Resources that used to support products like GPUs were poured into mobile SOC production.

I'm worried this sustained ramp-up has created excess capacity in the contract fabs. Coupled with the huge investment and teething problems integrating entirely new lithography process at smaller nodes, I expect a turbulent decade ahead for fabs.

now all chip maker get their profit on phone CPU

iphone make their own chip
almost all of phone does not used intel chip
AMD is now making and marketing their new powerful chip for flagship phone
snapdragon and many other new chip maker for phone

and the whole world are buying hand phone

Intel has very little market share on phone
they pull their Z atom out of phone market which normally can be found in ASUS zenfone 2
of couse intel slow down lah

You know this is all about semicon manufacturing not designing right?

iPhones don't make their own chips (that sounds scary enough to have the things manufacture its own brain)
Apple designs them and let TSMC/Samsung manufactures for them. :s22:

hahaha but tats a possible future of robotics! an organic chip that upgrades itself, like our brain(i think got some R&D teams onto it). we are living in an exciting world, whether Intel slows down or not. Seeing how handphones can play games at a fraction of a computer's power is exciting. If Intel were to go bust, rest assured that it's because something more relevant and powerful and fun and exciting is taking over its place. thats the power of consumerism.
