I have benefitted much from this forum in helping me planning my 1st trip to Tokyo and like to share my experience especially those going to Tokyo with toddler and stroller.

We stayed 8 nights at Hotel Century South Tower Shinjuku. Good hotel with convenient access to Shinjuku station. Opposite Takashimaya Times Square. I requested for a room near lift during my booking and the hotel gave the room just next to lift, very convenient. Don't want to waste time walking too far between lift and room. The hotel lobby at level 20, hotel can be accessed from Shinjuku terrace city at level 2 or from level 1 i.e. the road where hotel Sunroute Shinjuku located. Paid about $280 per night with king size bed, enough space for 3 of us: my wife, daughter and me. There is sofa that can be use to sleep as well.

Many train stations in Tokyo are not stroller-friendly, they don't have lift at every station entrance, have to carry stroller up and down by stairs .. Very tiring .

When taking Oedo line from Shinjuku station with stroller, the most convenient access is to go to hotel Century 1st floor, then go across the street and take lift beside hotel Sunroute, go down to B3 then change to lift to B7 where train gate is located.

If taking JR trains from Shinjuku station: Yamanote line or Chuo lines, go to South entrance, here all tracks have lifts to go down to the track.

If going to Harajuku station with stroller, remember to take exit or entrance from gate next to entrance to Meiji shine, don't use exit/entrance opposite Takeshita street, there is no lift only stairs.

There is Hyperdia apps android version, very useful and convenient compared to using web version, but have to find apk file from outside Google Play. We cannot download from Google Play as it is only open for Japan.

If you arrive at Narita airport, take Narita Express (NEX) and when buying NEX ticket, you also can buy Suica card for traveling in Tokyo. Very convenient to use Suica, pratically can be used for almost all trains in Tokyo: JR, Toei, Keio, Disney Resort train, Yurikamome (Odaiba train), etc. The card also be used to buy drinks from vending machine, buy things from FamilyMart, NewDays outlets, etc.

In Tokyo Disney Sea (I believe also in Disneyland), selfie stick and luggage/backpack with wheels are not allowed. If we already brought it, the Disney staff will remind us to selfie stick at the shortest length (which is basically useless, as it is the same with just extending our arm)

Thanks for sharing!
I believe these are great tips for parents planning for trips to Japan.
It'll greatly help for those bringing old folks too! :)

Tokyo can be considered to be the few more "stroller friendly" cities in Japan. You cannot believe how much stair climbing they have in Kyoto. orz
Was there myself last year and my legs were aching by evening on the 1st day lol..

Earlier in June, I was with my elderly aunt in Hokkaido and there were also few lifts or ramps... especially when taking the tour buses (booked from Japanican). Had to walk up a long flight of stairs that was near the Sapporo station and also climb down another flight of stairs to get to the bus, and because it was early morning, the departmental store wasn't open, so cannot use lift. So i guess things might be similar for strollers too.

As for the Disney or USJ or any other tourist spots (e.g. illumination viewing at Tokyo Midtown in Roppongi), it has been known for quite some time that such places discourage selfie rods. Mainly because people got hurt. Usually I'll just ask a staff who's nearby to help take, if not anyone who's nearby. Everyone's quite friendly there. Universal sign for photo taking and the ok sign works wonders! Speak English if you can, they don't really fancy the Chinese much if you can only grab the common folk.

Hyperdia can be downloaded from the play store in Japan. No need apk. Just wifi your device at the hotel and you're good to download. I managed to get mine before they region locked it a few years ago. There's a web browser version which you can use as well! :D

I hope this experience with your family was a fun one, Japan is gearing up for 2020, so I would expect more changes to their facilities. Haiz, if they could install more lifts... or make them bigger... =x

Just discovered when I was there that courier Ta-Q-Bin needs 2 days to deliver the luggage to Haneda airport. Luckily found another courier Keio Nekonote at Lumine 1 mall Shinjuku that can do same day delivery to Haneda airport. The outlet is near Keio gate Lumine 1. We need to drop the luggage there from 8.30 to 11am and it will be at Haneda International terminal from 4pm the same day. Cost 2000 yen per luggage. I think they are using Jal ABC delivery.

Note that we cannot drop the luggage earlier. They will charge overnight storage 1000 yen per luggage per day. Must drop it on the day we want to be delivered to Haneda airport.

We went to Yurakucho planning to try yakitori but ended up had dinner at nearby Wendy's.

Not possible to bring in the stroller in at street-side foodstall selling yakitori (could not leave the stroller outside as my tot was sleeping at that time and the weather was really cold)

Also note most of foodstalls there do not have English menu.

If you go to Fujiko Museum (Doraemon Museum) in Kawasaki (Noborito station) and plan to eat at Cafe Museum on 3rd floor, after finishing your tour on 1st level, go directly to 3rd floor and get queue number for the cafe before you watch 20 mins movie and let your kid play around on 2nd floor and rooftop garden.

Queue for cafe is very slow as people tend to take their time to enjoy the food.

We took the queue number after my tot played around on 2nd floor and rooftop garden, had to wait for 2 hours for our turn and we decided to eat somewhere else.

My opinion for Fujiko Museum is nothing much for tots and kids to see and play, 1st floor is exhibits of prof. Fujiko. 2nd floor indoor playground, manga comic corner and kids space where the tots can play with few toys. There is 20 mins Doraemon movie on 2nd floor but in Japanese language with no English substitle. The 3rd floor is rooftop garden with 2 Doraemon statues, museum cafe and snack shop.

Thanks for the tips. Going to japan in march next year for the sakura season with the wife and 2 kids.

I was planning to send 1 luggage to narita 4 days before departure coz we are going to kanazawa. That means I need to pay 4k yen just for the overnight storage.

I did not check for Narita airport .. You may want to check Ta-Q-Bin .. For Haneda airport, Ta-Q-Bin needs 2 days, so we don't need to pay overnight storage for this 2 days lead time ..

But do note, in my case, even I paid for 1 night storage, I still have to come back on the day of delivery as I could not fill up the form for airport delivery in advance, must be filled up on the day of delivery.

I paid overnight storage because so troublesome and luggage quite heavy to bring back to my hotel after I went to Keoi at Lumine 1.

Thanks stjoe for sharing your trip.

I'm also planning to go for sakura next year with my wife and 2 children. First time to Japan. Just anxious, is it possible to tour around by ourselves without knowing any Japanese?

TS, I was wondering if you are familiar with the ultra compact pockit stroller. Do you think it would make things easier especially when lifts are not available?

Tokyo and other big cities are fine. It's when you go to less traveled places or further away from Tokyo. Anyway there's Google translate and sign language. There's lots of tourists going to Japan so unless you're going of beaten path nothing can't be overcome.

Yes, very helpful .. we bought pockit for our trip to Tokyo .. It was really helpful .. Besides very compact, it is also very light compared other strollers .. We even handcarried it to the plane so when we landed at Narita we could use it straightaway ..

I'm also thinking of getting the Pockit. There is a new version with the recline function (Pockit+) coming but not out yet. Not sure if I should wait for it or is the current version (without recline) adequate already. I have one Combi with full recline but I think is too big to carry (especially since we will be using mostly public transportation there).

Actually for travelling... i rather the stroller is light than compact... and able to do one hand open/close... the Pockit still weighs at 4.9KG and to operate requires both hands... and the handle makes it hard to hang shopping bags... i prefer the Aprica Magical Light... it only weighs 2.9KG... and u can buy all those hooks to hang shopping bags... and you can open/close with one hand...

just my thoughts...

My suggestion is dont go for those flimsy and light strollers. Instead go for a good and sturdy one that's able to carry your shopping and diaper bags. I would also prioritize on those that can recline for your toddler to take a good nap during the day.

Kyoto won't be my choice for young toddlers but Tokyo is fine. Just remember to bring your diapers from here as you will find it difficult to buy one over there unless you're staying around a residential area.
