You can try the Olympus M43 range. I feel that the picture quality is comparable to those from a DSLR.
I currently own an Olympus OM D EM10 with a couple of lens and have not regretted it.

Have you considered a Canon EOS M series camera?

Far more compact and user friendly than a traditional DSLR, with performance somewhat like DSLR. It can't yet match a true DSLR for its respective class, but for casual users, it's probably adequate enough.
