I was in Shanghai recently.
Use 大眾點評 app.

Must try their local famous food & not imported Japanese food .
Like when in Singapore, chicken rice, laksa , chilli crabs etc etc

There are more & many are of the local favourites & long history.
The local queue is another indication like here .
Of course we may find them so so but they are nice to try esp they are cheap .

Go for 上海菜 & 杭州菜 when you go to these cities.
I even had 南京大排档 in Shanghai ,
北京烤鸭 , & ShangXi food etc there . Some of these are available here but cheaper (?) there .

I only know.... Xiao long bao and vegetarian food

We were in Shanghai last June. Not sure about their departmental stores food court. I saw one mega food court near the Yu Gardens. It looked like this.

We also enjoyed Hai Di Lao in Shanghai. They are very crowded and they have many outlets. Some outlets are opened round the clock!

Oh, they are famous for their Sheng Jian Pao. We had a meal at 小杨生煎.

In Shanghai, there are many malls, especially along the famous Nanjing Road. There would be many places to eat, so I guess it is up to your preference.

This video shows you footage from the touristy trams that run up and down along Nanjing Road. Cost to ride was 5RMB each way.

I couldn't find any video I made of the insides of departmental stores in Shanghai, but here is one of the APM Mall in Beijing. I recall they are similar. Beijing and Shanghai are both very developed, Tier 1, Chinese cities. Some of the things are not cheap either.

Shimao building 2nd highest floor has a number of restaurants which can command quite a queue

facing yang's dumplings is a HE FU noodle shop
their noodles are quite good
at around RMB 40 + a bowl

at 城隍庙， i had 南翔 汤包/XLB, it was wow

i hear that, that outlet is famous for their queues on weekends

which also has a queue of its own and everyone is coming out with a bag full of bread
most of them buy loaf bread, they have a couple of buns as well, but i didnt queue to buy
1 i dunno what to buy
2 i didnt really want to eat bread in shanghai LOL

along that road, beside Park Hotel, after walking pass the bakery from 人民广场 train station
there is a....

the queue is perpetually there, but i didnt go in

opposite Park Hotel , in the office building
i tried 功德林 at 南京西路总店,
it wasnt great, but i had a feeling i ordered the wrong stuff
their menu had no pictures, so that didnt help

There are many serving the Lanzhou specialty beef noodles. Very easy to recognise them from the restaurant facade.
